August at Arboretum

Plenty of exciting events for both you and your family this month at The Arboretum! All events are free with admission unless otherwise specified.



Sat & Sun, August 15 & 16, 9am–5pm Exotic cacti and succulents typically found in deserts, jungles and mountain highlands, and some that are rare and endangered in their native habitat, will be featured.

Sunday, August 16, 10:30am–noon Learn about the history of Rancho Santa Anita with Mitchell Hearns Bishop, Curator of the Historic Collections of The Arboretum.

Sunday, August 9; 10–11:30am Join Susan Eubank, Arboretum Librarian, as she gives an overview of the library, its collections and services. This introduction will give you an overview of the wonderful treasures contained in this valuable and unique library.

Tuesdays – Fridays, Now – Sept 30 Calling all fungis and fun-gals! In association with the Los Angeles Mycological Society, The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden presents an exhibit of all things fungal. Is there a difference between a toadstool and a mushroom? What is mold? This exhibit explores the biosphere-supporting properties as well as culinary and medical uses of fungi, including spore prints, fungal products, specimens and artwork featuring beautiful life- size mushroom models sculpted and painted by Arthur A. Barr.

Cal Phil Family Night Friday, August 7 Music Education Activities begin at 5pm Tram Tours begin at 5pm Concert; 7:30–8:30pm No tickets are required The California Philharmonic holds its annual Cal Phil Family Night, a free concert for Los Angeles County families and children, providing a much-needed remedy to the lack of symphonic music and music education activities during the summer.

Family Fun Classes! Aloes, Agaves and Pears (Oh My!) Saturday, August 15; 10am–Noon It’s hot outside! It’s easy for us to escape the summer heat, but how do plants survive? Let’s explore The Arboretum and learn about some very unusual plants that grow and thrive in some of the hottest, driest places on our planet. Bookworms A Free Storytelling Program Summer Sunflowers Sunday, August 16; 2pm Wednesday, August 19; 10am Come explore The Arboretum Library and our great story trees! Enjoy plant and nature stories and make a take-home craft. It is an indoor/outdoor program that will go on rain or shine, so please dress appropriately. Meet your Bookworm guide at the Main Entrance.

Individuals: Members $5, $6 non-members; Family Fee: $15 per family for members, $20 per family for non-members All class fees include admission into The Arboretum. Pre-registration is required. Registration will close at 5pm the day prior to the class.
