Arcadia Lumber

The Arcadia Lumber Company came to Arcadia in 1937 and was located at 214 North Santa Anita Avenue. It originally consisted of two small frame buildings with a center driveway. On the grounds were several large old oak trees. One it is said shaded the worshipers of the first out-of-doors church services held in Arcadia in Baldwin’s time.

In 1955, the facility was remodeled and the two small buildings were combined to make it one large modern store. Arcadia Lumber became the largest  business of its kind in the San Gabriel Valley.  (REI (1999) occupies the site today.)

Hammond Lumber Company was its biggest competitor (1966) and was located at 205 E. Huntington Drive (Embassy Suites is located here now).
