Victim rescued from fire

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Jan. 23 – 29, 2011. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, January 23 At 2:16 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 9000 block of Las Tunas Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a middle-aged male sitting on the bus bench suffering from traumatic injuries associated with a trip and fall. Fire personnel completed a thorough evaluation of this patient, treated his injuries, and transported him to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Monday, January 24 At 11:45 a.m., Engine 107 and Truck 105 responded with the Monrovia Fire Department to a structure fire in the 100 block of Magnolia Avenue in the City of Monrovia.  Upon arrival, fire personnel already on scene reported the back house on the property was on fire with a person trapped inside.  Search and rescue operations were underway.  Monrovia personnel began fire attack while Truck 105 crew provided positive pressure ventilation and Engine 107 crew was assigned as the Rapid Intervention Team.  Once the victim was removed from the structure, Rescue Ambulance 105 provided advanced life support and transported the patient to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Tuesday, January 25 At 5:42 p.m., E107 responded to a reported natural gas leak in the 1200 block of Oakglen Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered a natural gas leak in the service line leading into the house. Suppression personnel shut off the gas at the meter and requested Southern California Gas Company to respond to the location. The homeowner was also. Fire personnel remained on scene until representatives from the Gas Company arrived.

Wednesday, January 26 At 11:03 p.m., Engine 106 responded to an outside fire in the 1400 block of South Baldwin Avenue.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found a trash fire to the rear of the property.  Fire personnel extinguished the fire utilizing a mixture of water and Class A foam.

Thursday, January 27 At 2:21 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, and Battalion 105, with units from the Monrovia Fire Department, responded to a reported structure fire in the 1500 block of South Second Avenue.  Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered light smoke visible from the rear the structure. Upon further investigation, a fire was discovered in a small bedroom to the rear of the house, having charred a significant portion of the bedroom before the homeowner controlled it with a garden hose. Fire personnel continued with fire extinguishment, overhaul and cause and origin investigation. The fire was determined to be accidental.

Friday, January 28 At 10:29 p.m., Engine 106 responded to a refuse fire in the 1100 block of Hugo Reid Drive.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found a fully involved trash can fire on the campus of an elementary school. The fire was extinguished and overhauled. The cause of the fire was undetermined.

Saturday, January 29 At 3:47 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a traffic collision with injuries in the intersection of Baldwin Avenue and the 210 Freeway.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found a traffic collision involving multiple vehicles and patients.  Seven patients were treated at the scene, six of which were transported to local hospitals for further evaluation and treatment.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 605 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 16 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the Department with administrative duties in the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and Department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
