Arcadia Police Department Weekly Activity Report March 27 – April 2, 2016

Calls for Service / Formal Investigations 887 / 122 Total Year to Date for 2016 13,159 / 1,791

For the period of Sunday, March 27, through Saturday, April 2, the Police Department responded to 887 calls for service of which 122 required formal investigations. The following is a summary report of the major incidents handled by the Department during this period.

Sunday, March 27:

  1. Just after 1 a.m., an officer responded to Westfield Santa Anita mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, regarding a battery report. An investigation revealed the victim was hit multiple times by a group of five males after they made derogatory comments about the victim’s girlfriend. The victim was only able to describe one suspect, as a Hispanic male, 5’8” tall, wearing a red polo shirt. The investigation is ongoing.

  2. Around 7 p.m., an officer responded to Albertsons, 298 East Live Oak Avenue, regarding a petty theft report. A loss prevention specialist witnessed the suspect conceal approximately $100.00 worth of merchandise in a bag before exiting the store, failing to make payment. A search of the suspect revealed he was also in possession of methamphetamine and a smoking pipe. The 54-year-old male from Lancaster was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Monday, March 28:

  1. At about 1:55 a.m., an officer responded to the 400 block of Duarte Road regarding an activation of an Arcadia Police Department GPS tracker. Arcadia PD detectives had previously deployed decoy items containing bait property and tracking devices to combat the increase in thefts from vehicles parked in residential areas. An investigation revealed three suspects were in possession of the stolen property, tracking device, and additional stolen mail and credit cards. The female suspect also had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant, provided a false driver’s license to the officer, and resisted arrest. The 57-year-old male from Rosemead, a 27-year-old male from El Monte, and a 35-year-old female from El Monte were arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

  2. At approximately 3:20 p.m., an officer responded to a solo-vehicle hit and run traffic collision that occurred near the intersection of North Golden West Avenue and East Naomi Avenue. The officer discovered Party-1 collided with the curb and a large bush before exiting the vehicle, and fleeing on foot. Witnesses stated the driver appeared to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. An area search was conducted but the suspect was not located. The vehicle is registered to a male out of Temple City. The investigation is ongoing.

Tuesday, March 29:

  1. Around 8:18 p.m., an officer responded to the Arcadia Police Department front counter regarding an incident of child abuse. An investigation revealed the father threw his 5-year-old son on the couch and hit him in the head with an ice pack. The 47-year-old male from Arcadia was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. DCFS was notified.

  2. Just after 10:54 p.m., an officer responded to 24 Hour Fitness, 125 North First Avenue, regarding a commercial burglary report. The officer determined an unknown suspect stole the victim’s wallet and cellphone from a locked locker. The investigation is ongoing.

Wednesday, March 30:

  1. Shortly after 6:56 p.m., an officer responded to the Arcadia Police Department front counter regarding an elder abuse report. The reporting party claimed the 97-year-old victim suffered visible injuries and bed sores after receiving treatment at Arcadia Methodist Hospital in September 2015. The investigation is ongoing. Adult Protective Services was contacted.

  2. At about 8:05 p.m., officers responded to a residence in the 1600 block of South Tenth Avenue regarding a burglary alarm activation. The officer discovered the suspect smashed a rear sliding glass door but fled when the alarm activated. The suspect was gone prior to the officers’ arrival. No loss was reported. The investigation is ongoing.

Thursday, March 31:

  1. At approximately 1:56 a.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of Huntington Drive and Gateway Avenue for making an illegal U-turn. Upon contacting the driver, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol emitting from the driver. Through a series of tests, the officer determined the 39-year-old male from Texas was driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. The suspect was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

  2. Around 12:08 p.m., an officer responded to Macy’s at Westfield Santa Anita mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, regarding a petty theft report. A loss prevention specialist witnessed the suspect conceal numerous items in her stroller before exiting the store, failing to make payment. The 48-year-old female from Azusa was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Friday, April 1:

  1. At about 12:05 a.m., an officer initiated a traffic stop on a bicyclist for riding northbound in southbound lanes of traffic without proper lighting near the intersection of First Avenue and Huntington Drive. During a consensual search of the subject’s backpack, the officer located a checkbook and mail that did not belong to him. The 23-year-old male from Altadena was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

  2. Just after 1:45 p.m., an officer responded to the front counter of Arcadia Police Department regarding an identity theft report. The officer discovered an unknown suspect used the victim’s identifying information to file a fraudulent tax return. The investigation is ongoing.

Saturday, April 2:

  1. Around 8:21 p.m., an officer responded to Savers, 16 East Live Oak Avenue, regarding a theft report. Surveillance footage revealed two suspects worked in concert to switch out a watch while the employee was helping another customer. Both suspects fled the scene in a vehicle. The first suspect is described as a male, 35 to 39-years-old, 6’0” tall and heavy set. The second suspect is described as female, 30-years-old, 5’3” and approximately 150 pounds. The suspect vehicle is described as a white older model compact car. The investigation is ongoing.

  2. At approximately 3:28 p.m., an officer responded to Arcadia Methodist Hospital, 300 West Huntington Drive, regarding a subject who was causing a disturbance and refusing to leave. Upon contacting the 49-year-old male from Hesperia, the officer noticed symptoms of alcohol intoxication and determined the suspect was unable to care for himself. The subject also had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. He was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.
