Rain sparks calls for help

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Dec. 19 – Dec. 26, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, December 19 * At 10:18 a.m., Engine 105 responded to a water investigation in the 00 block of Campus Drive.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found the rear parking area of the location with a large amount of standing water that was slowly rising to the level of the residential buildings.  Upon further investigation, it was found that the submersible water pump at the location was not operating.  Fire personnel utilized a portable water pump to remove the standing water. * At 2:52 p.m., Engine 105 responded to the 600 block of West Duarte Road.  Upon arrival, fire personnel assisted the business owner in salvage operations to protect his business from water leaking through his roof by making minor repairs and covering the roof with plastic. * At 3:30 p.m., Engine 106, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, Battalion 105, Pasadena Truck 32 and Pasadena Engine 37 responded to an electrical fire in the 1000 block of La Cadena Avenue.  Upon arrival, fire personnel met with the occupant who stated there was a smell of something burning after the power came back on at the location following a power outage.  Fire personnel inspected the structure and were unable to find any form of fire hazard at the location. * At 4:12 p.m., Engine 106 and Truck 105 responded to a person trapped in an elevator in the 400 block of South Baldwin Avenue.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found that the occupants had extricated themselves from the elevator.  Engine 105 and Truck 105 personnel assessed the formerly trapped occupants for injuries.  Fire personnel also assisted building staff in helping patrons out of the building due to a power outage throughout the building complex.

Monday, December 20 At 1:40 p.m., E107 responded to a weather related incident in the 100 block of Rancho Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a large tree that toppled over due to ground saturation during heavy rain. The tree fell across Southern California Edison power lines, pulling the lines to the ground and onto the homeowner’s private vehicle. Southern California Edison was requested to the location and fire personnel remained on scene until Edison arrival.

Tuesday December 21, 2010 At 8:02 a.m., Truck 105 responded to the 400 block of Cambridge Drive for a flooding problem.  Upon Truck 105 arrival, suppression personnel found water in the basement of the structure.  Fire personnel utilized a portable sump pump to remove four inches of water from the basement that flooded during heavy rains.

Wednesday, December 22 At 5:01 p.m., Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, and Battalion 105, responded to structure fire in the 700 block of West Walnut Avenue in the City of Monrovia.  Truck 105 was assigned to ventilate smoke from a structure and overhaul. Engine 107 was assigned as the Rapid Intervention Crew, while Battalion 105 assisted in fire management. Engine 106 provided station coverage for the City of Monrovia, handling two incidents.

Friday, December 24, 2010 At 8:26 p.m., Engine 106, Engine 105, Engine 107 Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, and Battalion 105, with units from Los Angeles County and Monrovia Fire, responded to a reported structure fire in the 00 block of West Le Roy Avenue.  Fire personnel discovered light smoke inside the structure, resulting from a small appliance fire within the structure. Natural gas was shut off to the appliance, and suppression personnel utilized a thermal imaging camera to check for fire extension.  Overhaul and ventilation was provided by fire personnel. The scene was released to the property owner.

Saturday, December 25 At 12:56 p.m., Engine 106, Engine 105, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, with Los Angeles County and Monrovia Fire Department units, responded to a reported natural gas leak inside a business in the 400 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire crews were met with the strong odor of natural gas inside the structure.  Fire personnel located the gas leak, shut off the flow of gas and requested the Gas Company to respond to the scene. The scene was then released to mall security.

Sunday December 26, 2010 At 6:52 pm, Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a person choking in the 1000 block of Loma Lisa Lane.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found a six-year-old patient that was unconscious and unresponsive.  Paramedics assessed the patient, removed an obstruction from the patient’s airway, and ventilated the patient using a bag valve mask and oxygen.  The patient was transported to the nearest pediatric medical center for further treatment and evaluation.  The patient was breathing on his own upon arrival at the hospital.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 237 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 6 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the department with administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
