Overturned car occupant ejected

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Feb. 13 – Feb. 19, 2011. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, February 13 At 12:21 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical call in the 100 block of East Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered an elderly male who was experiencing chest pain while out for his daily walk. Fire personnel assessed the patient utilizing a 12-lead electrocardiogram, treated the patient and transported him to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Monday, February 14 At 12:43 p.m., Engine 105, with units from the Monrovia Fire Department, responded to a refuse fire in the 11000 block of Clark Street. Upon arrival, fire personnel found and extinguished a fire inside a trash dumpster. The dumpster contained small amounts of combustible metals and oils. Combustible metals are very difficult to extinguish, as they burn at extremely high temperatures, in some instances up to 5,000° F. The cause of the fire was determined to be spontaneous combustion.

Tuesday, February 15 At 3:15 a.m., Engine 106, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, and Battalion 105 responded to a reported traffic collision involving an overturned vehicle on the eastbound 210 Freeway west of Santa Anita Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a single overturned passenger vehicle with the occupant out of the vehicle. Fire personnel evaluated, treated, and transported the patient to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Wednesday, February 16 At 4:02 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a request for assistance by law enforcement in the 200 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel were placed in a staging area while Arcadia Police investigated a hand grenade inside a vehicle.  The grenade was transported in a private vehicle to the parking lot adjacent to the Arcadia Police Department by a local citizen. Arcadia Police requested Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad to the incident to examine the condition of the grenade. The grenade was detonated on sight by Bomb Squad personnel. Fire personnel were released from the scene without incident.

Thursday, February 17 At 8:07 p.m., Truck 105, with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, responded to a reported structure fire in the 9000 block of Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a large two-story apartment complex with light smoke coming from one unit. Upon further investigation, fire personnel found a small electrical fire coming from a mal-functioning electrical outlet. Firefighters disconnected the power to the outlet, extinguished the fire and released the scene to the occupants.

Friday, February 18 At 8:16 p.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical call in the 1800 block of Elevado Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a 98 year old who was injured due to a trip and fall. Fire personnel treated the patient for a laceration and released the patient to family members. The patient’s family stated they would follow up with their personal physician.

Saturday, February 19 At 5:28 p.m., Engine 106 and Engine 105 responded to a reported utility pole fire in the 1100 block of Encanto Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found two transformer fires caused by a lightning strike that had extended to the pole and cross arms. Fire personnel requested Southern California Edison (SCE) and extinguished the pole fires. An unknown number of residences were without power pending SCE repairs.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 557 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 8 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the Department with administrative duties in the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and Department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
