Multiple dog bites, 20-person fight

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Nov. 7 – 13, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, November 7 At 9:26 a.m., Engine 106, Engine 107, Truck 105 and Rescue Ambulance 106, responded to a reported structure fire in the 600 block of Brightside Lane in the City of Pasadena. Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered smoke in the area due to a hot mopping operation on the roof of the structure, causing a small fire. The fire was extinguished and ventilation was provided for smoke removal. The scene was released to Pasadena Fire.

Monday, November 8 At 10:19 p.m., Engine 106, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, and Battalion 105 responded to a reported traffic collision involving an overturned vehicle on West Colorado Boulevard east of Monte Vista Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a single vehicle on its side with the driver out of the vehicle. Fire personnel evaluated and treated the driver and released the scene to the Arcadia Police Department for their investigation.

Tuesday, November 9 At 3:37 p.m., Engine 106, Rescue Ambulance 106, and Battalion 105 responded to a medical assist in the 300 block of West Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated and treated a female patient suffering from numerous dog bites. Arcadia Police and Battalion 105 responded to the scene due to a report of a resident carrying a firearm to protect the victim from further attack. The patient received advanced life support measures at the scene and was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Arcadia Police personnel were able to capture the dog and secure the scene.

Wednesday, November 10 At 1:09 p.m., Engine 105 responded to a reported fire alarm activation in the 400 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a fully activated fire alarm system with all mall theaters being evacuated. After further investigation, firefighters determined a service technician drained the wrong fire sprinkler riser, causing the alarm activation. The system was reset the property released to management.

Thursday, November 11 At 4:57 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 200 block of West Camino Real Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated and treated a female patient complaining of extremity and head pain after being hit by an automobile while riding her bicycle. The patient received basic life support measures at the scene and was placed in full cervical spine immobilization. The patient was transported to Kaiser Baldwin Park Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment.

Friday, November 12 At 4:25 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a reported fight in progress in the 600 block of East Live Oak Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found approximately 20 persons that had been involved in the incident to some extent. Fire personnel evaluated and treated two patients for blunt injuries related to the assault. Engineer Chen Suen used his bi-lingual skills to translate and assist the Arcadia Police in their investigation of the incident. All persons refused further medical treatment and the scene was released to Arcadia Police.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 440 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 6 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the department with administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
