Jaws of life, elevator traps

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Nov. 21 – 27, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, November 21 At 5:35 p.m., Engine 105 responded to arcing wires in the 100 block of Bonita Street. While en-route Engine 105 was advised that a tree was on fire, as well. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a transformer on fire, which spread to a nearby tree. Fire personnel, extinguished the fire with Class A foam and remained at the scene until Southern California Edison abated the hazard. A number of homes were without power for a brief time.

Tuesday, November 23 * At 1:50 a.m., Engine 106, Truck 105, Monrovia Engine 102, Rescue Ambulance 106 and Battalion 105 responded to a traffic collision with people trapped on the Eastbound 210 Freeway at Santa Anita Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered one vehicle had gone off the freeway and landed on the embankment between the freeway and the on ramp. Fire personnel extricated the single patient by removing the driver side door and the roof of the vehicle with the “Jaws of Life”. The patient was treated at the scene with advanced life support and transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment. * At 9:02 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, with units from the Monrovia Fire Department, responded to a reported structure fire in the 400 block of North Second Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found heavy smoke coming from the area of a public storage facility. After further investigation, fire personnel determined the fire was located in a homeless encampment under the Colorado Street Bridge along the Los Angeles County Flood Control Channel. Firefighters extinguished and overhauled the fire, and conducted three searches for possible occupants, finding none. The cause of the fire was determined to be unattended candles. One firefighter suffered a back injury.

Wednesday November 24 At 12:49 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a traffic collision involving a motorcycle in the intersection of Huntington Drive and Old Ranch Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found the driver of the motorcycle lying in the street after being cut off by a vehicle and striking the curb. The patient was treated at the scene with advanced life support and transported to a local trauma center for further evaluation and treatment.

Friday, November 26 * At 12:45 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 100 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated and treated a female patient involved in a physical altercation. The patient had sustained a large facial laceration and been knocked unconscious. Fire personnel provided basic life support measures at the scene, including dressings for the lacerations. The patient refused any additional treatment or transport. * From 10:15 a.m., until 6:00 p.m., the Arcadia Fire Department responded to five (5) emergency calls for service at Westfield Mall in the 400 block of South Baldwin Avenue. One of those calls involved a subject trapped in a freight elevator. Engine 106, Truck 105, and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to the AMC Theatre where they found one person trapped inside the elevator between floors. Fire personnel, along with an elevator service technician, worked for over one hour using a variety of power and hydraulic tools to free the person from the elevator. The person was evaluated by Arcadia Paramedics for stress related complaints but refused transport to an area emergency room.

Saturday, November 27 At 3:29 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 200 block of Colorado Place. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated and treated a female patient experiencing abdominal pain with a possible gastro-intestinal bleed. The patient received advanced life support measures on scene, including two intravenous lines. The patient was transported to San Gabriel Community Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 309 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 10 hours of volunteer activities. Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the department with administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports. It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
