Illegal trash burn in backyard

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Nov. 28 – Dec. 4, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, November 28 At 3:42 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 1100 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated and treated a female patient experiencing chest pain and shortness of breath. The patient received advanced life support measures at the scene including a 12-lead electrocardiogram and narcotics for pain management.  The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Monday, November 29 At 5:02 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Monrovia Engine 102, Monrovia Truck 101, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105 and Battalion 105 responded to a possible house fire in the 100 block of East Camino Real Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel noticed light smoke in the area. Upon further investigation, firefighters found a resident was burning trash in his back yard. Fire personnel had the resident extinguish the fire and educated the resident on the City’s codes regarding the burning of trash.

Tuesday, November 30 At 8:33 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 100 block of Campus Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a minor female lying on the gymnasium floor clutching her chest and having difficulty breathing. Fire personnel evaluated, treated, and transported this patient to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Wednesday, December 1 * At 7:38 p.m., Engine 107 and Truck 105 responded to assist the Monrovia Fire Department with a house fire in the 400 block of Primrose Avenue in the City of Monrovia. Upon arrival, Engine 107 was assigned as the Rapid Intervention Crew (RIC) to protect the firefighters working inside the structure. Truck 105 personnel performed salvage work to protect the personal belongings of the occupant. * At 9:31 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a sick person in the intersection of Naomi Avenue and Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an elderly patient having difficulty breathing. Fire personnel evaluated, treated, and transported this patient to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Thursday, December 2 At 1:24 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, and Battalion 105, with units from the Monrovia Fire Department, responded to a reported structure fire in the 00 block of West Leroy Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel encountered smoke showing from the residence. Fire crews discovered a fire had initiated in the sub-flooring of the structure due to construction activities. Fire personnel provided fire extinguishment, horizontal ventilation, overhaul, and cause and origin investigation. The fire scene was secured and released to Arcadia Building Department for follow up.

Saturday, December 4 * At 12:02 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to an assault victim in the 100 block of El Dorado Street. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a female patient who had been involved in a physical altercation earlier in the evening.  The patient refused any additional treatment or transportation to a local hospital. * At 9:11 a.m., Engine 106, Engine 105, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, Battalion 105, with units from the Monrovia and Los Angeles County Fire Departments, responded to a reported structure fire in the 900 block of Arcadia Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a large two-story apartment complex with smoke coming from a ground floor unit. After further investigation, fire personnel found and confined a kitchen fire to the area of origin. Firefighters extinguished, overhauled, and investigated the fire. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 476 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 10 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the department with administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
