Free Thursday concerts 7/8-8/19

Arcadia’s free summer Thursday evening concert series on the lawn between City Hall and the Police Department (240 West Huntington Drive) starts up again at 6:30 p.m. July 8, thanks this year to a grant by Target stores.

Kids will enjoy the free fun zone, featuring games, crafts, and activities each week. Refreshments such as popcorn, candy, and drinks are sold inexpensively to support the Arcadia Historical Society. For more information, please call 626.574.5113.

Get the Flash Player to see this content. . The concerts are hosted by the City of Arcadia’s Recreation and Community Services Department, which has announced a partnership with Target. The retail chain is providing a grant as part of the company’s ongoing efforts to strengthen families and communities throughout the country.

“We’re proud to partner with the City of Arcadia as part of our ongoing commitment to give back to the communities where our guests and team members live and work,” said Laysha Ward, President, Community Relations, Target.

Listed below is the concert line up for this summer.

July 8th—The Answer—Classic Rock Since 1964 (43 years) The Answer has been supplying its renditions of top 40 hits, back then popular rock and today now classified as classic rock. The Answer’s uncanny reproduction of all that’s good in classic rock today sets them far above their competition. With stage energy, witty antics, and FREE giveaways, The Answer delivers a knock out show which is enjoyed by all ages! This is simply a show you can not miss!

July 15th—Doo-Wah Riders—Country There is no one else like the Doo-Wah Riders. For over 20 years they have been riding their own patch of the musical range throughout the west. They possess the rare combination of many years of experience and youthful energy, fired by a love for what they do. The Doo-Wahs are country, with a unique, original sound. They define their sound as “high energy country with a cajun twist”. Their tight musicianship and powerful arrangements of classic, contemporary, and original songs have made them favorites everywhere they go.

July 22th—Mariachi Divas—Mariachi & More unded and directed by trumpet player Cindy Shea in 1999, Mariachi Divas are making big waves on the national music scene. Mariachi Divas are a unique, multi-cultural, all female ensemble, imbued with the true flavor of Los Angeles. In 2009, Mariachi Divas won the Grammy Award for Best Regional Mexican Album of the year for their 2008 release, Canciones De Amor. This marks the first time in the history of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences that an all-female mariachi group has been a nominee, or of course, a winner. You don’t want to miss this award winning show!

July 29th—Upstream—Caribbean Music with Steel Drums Get ready for the Upstream experience…please leave your inhibitions and other real world concerns at home and be ready to escape to another world and have some fun! It’s been quite a wild ride for the members of Upstream, formed in the republic of Trinidad and Tobago in the late 1980’s and reformed in southern California in the early 1990’s. Upstream invites you to come do the West Indian boogie, to their intriguing selection of exciting Reggae, Calypso, Soca and Steel Drum music. Everyone is welcome to come join the magical music experience.

August 5th—Cold Duck—70s top 40 Back by popular demand! Join us once again for this special celebration….National Night Out & Arcadia’s 107th Birthday! National Night Out promotes crime prevention and awareness through police-community partnerships. Arcadia’s Police and Fire Department will be joining us for this very special occasion. Free fingerprinting for the kids, crime prevention materials and other information will be available. Stop by and show your support to Arcadia’s finest. But wait…that is not it! Help Arcadia celebrate our 107th birthday by enjoying some birthday cake (while supplies last) sponsored by Arcadia’s Historical Society. Since it’s inception over two decades ago, Cold Duck’s philosophy has been directly responsible for their continued success: “Give the people what they want to hear and have a good time delivering it!” With this solid experienced musicianship, it should come as no surprise that Cold Duck is renowned for being one of the most versatile bands in existence. Cold Duck continues its tradition of excellent musicianship and groovin’ rhythms. So let’s have a good time dancing the night away!

August 12th—Wise Guys—Big Band From Swing to Swank, The Wiseguys Big Band Machine is an 18-piece ensemble dedicated to keeping great music alive. For 20 yrs this Montebello, California-based big band features a screamin’ horn line, talented vocalists, exciting soloists, and a roarin’ rhythm section. Their repertoire includes the swingin’ vocal tunes of Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, dean Martin and Peggy Lee, big band favorites from Glenn Miller, Pérez Prado and Buddy Rich; and The Wiseguys keep audiences on their feet and dancing with classic mambos and cumbias, and great dance music from the 50’s and 60’s.

August 19th—Hot August Night—Tribute to Neil Diamond As lead singer, Dean Colley, is mesmerizing as he captures Neil Diamond’s look and unique vocal style. With the signature sequined shirt and Las Vegas style band, you will be dazzled with sights and sounds of an actual Neil Diamond concert. Be sure to join us for the last concert of the series on this…”Hot August Night!”
