Fire Department Weekly Report -week of July 16 - 22, 2023



The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of July 16 - 22, 2023. The following is a breakdown of incident types recorded for this time period:

Sunday, July 16 At 4:28 p.m., Truck 105 responded to an odor investigation call in the 1000 block of South Ninth Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel contacted the residence’s occupants who stated there was a strong unknown chemical odor around the outside of their property. Firefighters did not detect any odor, but utilized a multi-gas meter and found no readings in or around the structure. The residents were advised to move to fresh air and re-contact 911 if odor returned or they began experiencing medical symptoms. The reporting party also advised of ongoing issues with gas service in the area over the last 48 hours. A short time later, the Los Angeles County Fire Department advised they had an active chemical fire in El Monte that could have been the source of the odor. Monday, July 17 At 3:05 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a traffic collision on the eastbound 210 Freeway at Santa Anita Avenue. Firefighters arrived to find a three- vehicle traffic collision with one person experiencing head and neck pain. The 38-year- old female was provided with advanced life support measures on scene including medications and cervical collar. She was transported to USC Arcadia Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Tuesday, July 18 At 8:20 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 400 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a 12-year- old female patient who had a seizure. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene including 12-lead cardiac monitoring, blood glucose level check, and intravenous access. The patient was transported to USC Arcadia Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Wednesday, July 19 At 6:03 p.m., Engine 106, Engine 107, and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a traffic accident with a motorcycle down on the eastbound 210 freeway at Santa Anita Avenue. Firefighters arrived to find a 37-year-old male suffering from body pain after crashing his motorcycle. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene including 12-lead cardiac monitoring, blood glucose level check, and intravenous access. The patient was transported to Huntington Memorial Trauma Center for further evaluation and treatment. Thursday, July 20 At 7:03 p.m., Engine 102, Engine 105, Engine 106, LA County Fire, Truck 105, Truck 101, Rescue Ambulance 105, and Battalion 105 responded to a reported structure fire in the 600 block of Beverly Avenue. Upon arrival, firefighters found occupants in the front yard with a contractor on site. Engine 105 crew investigated the interior of the structure and found a malfunctioning gas line inside the attic space. Truck 105 crew quickly accessed the gas shutoff at the meter and prevented the potential for fire spread. Fire crews inspected the attic space with a thermal imaging camera and no heat signatures were present. It was determined the air conditioning unit in the attic had a faulty gas line in need of repair. The air conditioning unit was also isolated at the electrical panel.

Friday, July 21 At 1:45 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a traffic collision in the area of West Colorado Drive and Altura Road. Firefighters arrived to find a single vehicle traffic collision with a flowing hydrant and one patient requiring medical care. Rescue Ambulance 106 assessed the solo occupant; however, the patient refused any treatment or transport to a hospital. Fire personnel were able to shut down the flowing hydrant. Public Works responded to assess the potential damage to the water system and to restore the hydrant. Arcadia Police Officers were on scene to assist with traffic control and removal of the disabled vehicle from the roadway. Saturday, July 22 At 1:47 p.m., USAR 106 and Battalion 105 responded to a Mountain Rescue on the Mount Wilson Trail. Arcadia firefighters assembled with members of Sierra Madre Search and Rescue to build multiple reconnaissance teams to find a 19-year-old male hiker suffering from weakness and heat exposure. Multiple victim locations were given which added to the complexity of the rescue in the extreme heat. Los Angeles County Air Five helicopter crew was requested to ascertain the hiker’s location and potentially expedite his extraction. The patient was eventually located and air lifted to a local landing zone for care and treatment.
