Eldery man on street after wreck

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Feb. 6 – Feb. 12, 2011. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, February 6 At 6:05 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a traffic collision involving a pedestrian in the intersection of South Santa Anita Avenue and Alta Street. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a single vehicle with heavy front end and windshield damage and one elderly unconscious male lying in the street. Fire personnel completed a head-to-toe examination of the patient, finding numerous broken bones and other traumatic injuries. Fire personnel provided advanced life support measures and transported the patient to an area trauma center for further evaluation and treatment.

Tuesday, February 8 At 12:28 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 400 block of Stanford Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a non-breathing, pulseless elderly male. Using a 12-lead electrocardiogram, fire personnel determined the patient had a non-viable heart rhythm along with other obvious signs of death. The patient was pronounced dead at the scene and released to the Arcadia Police to assist the family with necessary arrangements.

Wednesday, February 9 At 3:50 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a fall victim in the 800 block of Arcadia Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered an elderly female had fallen inside her apartment the day before. The patient had an altered level of consciousness and was treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Thursday, February 10 At 9:54 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Air Utility 106, Battalion 105, with units from the Monrovia Fire Department, responded to a reported structure fire in the 1500 block of South Tenth Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found heavy smoke and fire coming from a single story residential structure. Fire personnel had to force entry into the structure through the front door and encountered heavy black smoke within the structure and the attic fully involved with fire. Firefighters laddered the structure for vertical ventilation, as additional firefighters entered through the front door with hose lines. Search and rescue measures were initiated and no occupants were found. Firefighters declared the fire extinguished at 10:28 p.m.

Friday, February 11 At 2:18 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to medical call in the 400 block of East Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an elderly patient who was having a difficult time breathing. Fire personnel provided advanced life support at the scene and transported the patient to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Saturday, February 12 At 11:17 a.m., Engine 106 responded to a motor home fire in the 200 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found heavy smoke and fire coming from a storage area located near the undercarriage of a large motor home. Fire personnel extinguished and overhauled the fire with minimal damage to the remainder of the motor home. The fire was determined to have started in the area of the hot water heater. The motor home was released to the owner.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 516 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 15 hours of volunteer activities. Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the Department with administrative duties in the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports. It is worth noting that all volunteers and Department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
