The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of March 6-12, 2011. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, March 6 At 12:03 p.m., Engine 106, with units from the Monrovia Fire Department, responded to a medical assist in the 700 block of West Camino Real Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated and treated a female patient who was unresponsive and not breathing. The patient received advanced life support measures at the scene, including Automated Electronic Defibrillation and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. The patient was transported with pulses and breathing on her own to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further treatment and evaluation.

Monday, March 7 At 7:09 p.m., Engine 106, Rescue Ambulance 105, with units from the Monrovia and Pasadena Fire Departments, responded to a reported traffic collision on the westbound 210 Freeway, east of Santa Anita Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a two-vehicle traffic accident and four patients. All patients were treated and transported to area emergency rooms for traumatic injuries associated with the collision.

Wednesday, March 9 At 12 noon, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, and one unit from the Monrovia Fire Department responded to a reported drowning in the 5400 block of Peck Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a person floating in the water at the Peck Road Water Conservation Park.  The Arcadia Police advised fire personnel that the patient was deceased and the area was cordoned off as a crime scene.  Firefighters were then directed to the reporting party who was experiencing chest pain. Fire Paramedics used an interpreter to determine the patient was distressed by finding the body and did not wish to be treated or transported.  The patient was released to the Arcadia police for further investigation.

Thursday, March 10 At 6:29 a.m., Engine 105 responded to a fire alarm in the 400 block of East Huntington Drive.  Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered a fire alarm that was sounding and the smell of electrical burning on the second and third floors of the building.  After investigating, fire personnel determined that a computer server was the source of the smell.

Friday, March 11 * At 3:13 p.m., Truck 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 00 block of East Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated and treated a male patient who had suffered amputation of a finger. The patient received basic life support measures at the scene including bleeding control and retrieval and transportation of the amputated body part. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further treatment and evaluation. * At 4:03 p.m., Truck 105 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a welfare check in the 100 block of East Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an elderly couple on their second floor patio locked out of their house. Fire personnel made access to the residence and helped the couple back into their home.

Saturday, March 12 At 1:21 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 200 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a 90-year old male lying on the ground in the stable area. After further investigation, fire personnel determined the patient had been injured by a run-away horse, after pushing a little girl out of its path. Fire personnel found the patient had sustained numerous traumatic injuries as a result of the intervention. While en-route to an area trauma center, fire paramedics observed the patient’s vital signs dropping and took advanced measures to bring the his heart rate and other vital signs back into normal ranges prior to arrival.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 495 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review. Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 10 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the Department with administrative duties in the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and Department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
