Baby born as firefighters drive

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Jan. 2 – 8, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, January 2 At 2:54 p.m., Engine 105 responded to a refuse fire in the 600 block of South Santa Anita Avenue.  A passerby called 9-1-1 to report a refuse container involved with fire. Fire personnel responded to location and found the container fully engulfed in flames. The fire was extinguished utilizing Class A foam.

Monday, January 3 At 7:37 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to an emergency medical incident in the 400 block of West Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an elderly female lying on the floor with stroke-like symptoms. Fire personnel performed a complete evaluation on the patient and administered appropriate drug therapy as prescribed by the emergency room physician.  The patient was transported to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Tuesday, January 4 At 8:09 p.m., Engine 105 responded to a reported vehicle fire in the 100 block of East Camino Real.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found a pickup truck with smoke coming from the cab of the vehicle.  The driver had noticed a fire in the cab and pulled over to extinguish it.  Fire personnel assisted the driver to ensure the fire was completely extinguished and arranged to have the vehicle towed to a repair facility.

Wednesday, January 5 At 2:49 p.m., Engine 106, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, Battalion 105, and a unit from the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a reported traffic collision with a vehicle into a structure in the 700 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a single passenger vehicle into the breezeway of an apartment complex with the driver of the vehicle unconscious in the driver’s seat. Fire personnel performed a thorough evaluation of the patient, administered advanced life support measures, and transported the patient to an area trauma center for further evaluation and treatment. Firefighters remained on scene to assist the tow company with the safe removal of the vehicle and to assist the Building Department with their inspection of the structure.

Thursday, January 6 At 5:10 p.m., Truck 105, Engine 107, Rescue Ambulance 105 and Battalion 105 were dispatched to an overturned vehicle with people trapped at the intersection of North Second Street and East Colorado Boulevard.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found a two-vehicle accident with one vehicle on its side and three patients, one of them trapped inside the overturned vehicle.  Two patients were treated for head and neck injuries and transported to a local hospital.  The third patient, who was extricated from the overturned vehicle, was transported to a trauma center.

Friday, January 7 * At 1:56 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to an expectant mother in labor in the 400 block of East Live Oak Avenue.  While enroute, fire personnel were notified that the baby had been delivered.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found the patient with a newborn baby girl.  Fire personnel treated the new mother and daughter at the scene and transported both of them to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment. * At 3:34 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 600 block of West Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated and treated a female patient with massive hemorrhaging following a surgical procedure. The patient was provided oxygen therapy and bleeding control. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 289 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 10 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the Department with administrative duties in the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and Department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
