Arcadia Fire Department Weekly Report – week of August 19 – 25, 2018

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of August 19 – 25, 2018. The following is a breakdown of incident types recorded for this time period:




Sunday, August 19th

At 10:41 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 400 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a 28-year-old male in police custody exhibiting a behavioral problem. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene including 12-lead cardiac monitoring and blood glucose monitoring. The patient was transported to Methodist Hospital of Southern California for further evaluation and treatment.

Monday, August 20th

At 2:57 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical call in the 100 block of Las Tunas Drive. Fire crews arrived to find an 85-year-old female experiencing shortness of breath. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene including 12-lead cardiac monitoring, blood glucose monitoring, and intravenous access. The patient was transported to Methodist Hospital of Southern California for further evaluation and treatment.

Tuesday, August 21st

At 5:01 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 500 block of East Norman Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a 75-year-old male in an altered level of consciousness after a mechanical fall. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene including oxygen therapy, 12-lead cardiac monitoring, intravenous access, cervical spine immobilization, and drug therapy. The patient was transported to Huntington Memorial Trauma Center for further evaluation and treatment.

Wednesday, August 22nd

At 8:56 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Engine 107, Rescue Ambulance 105 and Battalion 105, along with Los Angeles County and Monrovia Fire Departments responded to a brush fire in the 5400 block of Peck Road. L.A. County Fire was first to arrive at the incident and immediately pulled hose lines to provide for perimeter control. Crews from all three agencies established control lines around the fire and mopped it up.

Thursday, August 23rd

At 9:58 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 600 block of West Duarte Road. Fire crews arrived to find an 83-year-old female feeling weak and dizzy after having blood drawn at a doctor’s office. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene including intravenous access and 12-lead cardiac monitoring. The patient was transported to Methodist Hospital of Southern California for further evaluation and treatment.

Friday, August 24th

At 12:39 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical call in the 1100 block of South Eighth Avenue. Upon arrival, fire crews found an elderly female in an altered level of consciousness. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene including intravenous access, 12-lead cardiac monitoring, and oxygen therapy. The patient was transported to Methodist Hospital of Southern California for further evaluation and treatment.

Saturday, August 25th




At 9:10 p.m., Engine 105 responded to an unknown type fire in the 400 block of East Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire units found smoke coming from an underground electrical vault fire. Fire crews established a perimeter and secured the area until the arrival of Southern California Edison personnel.

Volunteer Activity

During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 108 hours of volunteer services. Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their time to assist the Department with administrative, fire prevention, and miscellaneous duties.

Training

During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 392 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.




Community Outreach









Community Outreach: Arcadia Fire Department, Methodist Hospital, and the Mended Hearts, Inc. Joined Forces in Educating the Public on the Importance of Calling 911

On August 23, the Arcadia Fire Department, in collaboration with the cardiac experts from the Methodist Hospital of Southern California (Methodist Hospital), presented to the Mended Hearts Cardiac Support Group at the Vance Auditorium regarding the importance of calling 911 to save time and minimize tissue damage especially for those who are experiencing cardiac symptoms. The session was coordinated by Jim Cooke, Mended Hearts Arcadia Coordinator/Facilitator and introduced by Anne Lee, RN, DNP, Cardiac Services Manager and Clinical Co-facilitator at the Methodist Hospital. On the topic of chain of survival and when to call 911, the presentation was led by Battalion Chief Chen Suen from the Arcadia Fire Department, along with Paramedics Jeff Bird and Joseph Park; and then followed by Methodist Hospital Emergency Room (ER) Clinical Educator Christine Lopez, RN, BSN who talked about how vital the communications are between the paramedics and the ER Department; and Sr. Management Analyst Maria Lourdes Taylor from the Arcadia Fire Department who provided information regarding the City ofArcadia’s Paramedic Membership Program, which greatly assists the Arcadia residents inpaying for their ambulance and transportation services.
