Arcadia Fire Department Weekly Report Week of August 12 – 18, 2018

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of August 12 – 18, 2018. The following is a breakdown of incident types recorded for this time period:




Sunday, August 12th

At 8:12 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 300 block of East Rodell Place. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a 76-year-old male in full cardiac arrest. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene including CPR, advanced airway placement, oxygen therapy, 12-lead cardiac monitoring, cardiac defibrillation, intravenous access, and drug therapy. Return of spontaneous circulation was successfully achieved in the field. The patient was transported to Methodist Hospital of Southern California for further evaluation and treatment.

Monday, August 13th

At 9:44 p.m., Engine 106 and Engine 105 responded to a downed wires call in the 1000 block of Arcadia Avenue. Fire personnel arrived to find power lines down and Arcadia police officers using a fire extinguisher to put out a residential air conditioning unit fire. Fire crews removed the burned unit from the residence and checked for extension. Investigation revealed a Mylar balloon drifted into electrical power lines resulting in a power surge that in turn caused the air conditioning unit to short circuit and burst into flames. Southern California Edison personnel responded to the scene for restoration of power.

Tuesday, August 14th

At 11:07 a.m., Engine 106 and Monrovia Engine 102 responded to a vehicle fire on the westbound 210 Freeway at Myrtle Avenue in Monrovia. Upon arrival, fire crews found a BMW coupe with the engine compartment fully involved with fire. Fire personnel deployed a hose line and quickly extinguished the fire. The fire was determined to have started in the engine compartment. The incident was released to Monrovia Fire & Rescue and the California Highway Patrol.

Wednesday, August 15th

At 6:53 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical call in the 1900 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Fire personnel arrived to find a 65-year-old female experiencing shortness of breath. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene including oxygen therapy, 12-lead cardiac monitoring, intravenous access, and drug therapy. The patient was transported to Methodist Hospital of Southern California for further evaluation and treatment.

Thursday, August 16th

At 10:59 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 700 block of West Camino Real Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated an elderly female feeling weak and dizzy with vomiting. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene including oxygen therapy, neurological assessment, intravenous therapy, and 12-lead cardiac monitoring. The patient was transported to Methodist Hospital of Southern California for further evaluation and treatment.




Friday, August 17th

At 5:37 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a traffic collision involving a pedestrian in the 400 block of South Old Ranch Road. Fire crews arrived to find a 72-year-old unconsciousness male who had been struck by a vehicle. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene including full spinal immobilization, intravenous access, 12-lead cardiac monitoring, and oxygen therapy. The patient was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital Trauma Center for further evaluation and treatment.

Saturday, August 18th

At 3:39 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 400 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire crews found a 92-year-old female experiencing head pain after a mechanical fall. Paramedics provided basic life support measures on scene including full spinal immobilization. The patient was transported to Methodist Hospital of Southern California for further evaluation and treatment.

Strike Team Activity

OES Engine 343, as part of Strike Team 1821A, began the week still assigned to the Carr Incident in Redding, California. Crews continued to assist with the construction of indirect fire lines and perimeter control. On Friday, August 17th, the engine was released from the incident and returned to Arcadia.

Volunteer Activity

During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 108 hours of volunteer services. Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their time to assist the Department with administrative, fire prevention, and miscellaneous duties.

Training

During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 333 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.
