Arcadia Fire Department Weekly Report: week of April 15 – April 21, 2018

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of April 15 – April 21, 2018. The following is a breakdown of incident types recorded for this time period:




Sunday, April 15th

At 9:35 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in 1400 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Fire personnel arrived to find a 60-year-old male experiencing syncope. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene including 12-lead cardiac monitoring, blood glucose monitoring, and intravenous access. The patient was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Monday, April 16th

At 4:40 p.m., Truck 105, Engine 106, and Battalion 105 assisted units from Sierra

Madre Fire Department on a structure fire in the 300 block of Santa Anita Court, Sierra Madre. Upon arrival, fire units found smoke coming from the front of the structure. Upon further investigation, crews located a dryer burning in rear of structure. Sierra Madre and Arcadia Fire personnel aggressively extinguished the fire and contained the fire to building of origin. In addition, fire crews provided incident command, searched for any victims, ventilated the structure, and maintained firefighter safety.

Tuesday, April 17th

At 5:54 a.m., Engine 105 responded to a fire alarm activation in the 00 block of East Live Oak Avenue. While in route, the fire was upgraded to a full first alarm structure fire assignment. Engine 106, Monrovia Engine 102, Truck 105, Monrovia Truck 101, Rescue Ambulance 105, and Battalion 105 were added to the incident. Fire crews arrived to find a sprinkler head activated from a small fire in a rear storage room. Fire personnel removed and extinguished any remaining smoldering items. The sprinkler head was replaced and the fire alarm and suppression system were restored. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Wednesday, April 18th

At 5:46 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 200 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a 26- year-old female with head pain after being head-butted by a horse. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene, including oxygen, cardiac monitoring, pain management, and cervical spine evaluation. The patient was transported to Methodist Hospital of Southern California for further evaluation and treatment.




Thursday, April 19th

At 12:41 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 106,

Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, and Battalion 105, along with Monrovia Paramedic Squad 101, and Shaffer Ambulance responded to a traffic collision at the intersection of Huntington Drive and Santa Anita Avenue. Fire crews arrived to find a vehicle that had struck a pedestrian, lost control, hit a tree, and overturned.  The vehicle’s driver was removed with the help of bystanders prior to fire department arrival. Firefighters stabilized the vehicle before removing the second victim. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene including full spinal immobilization, intravenous access, and 12-lead cardiac monitoring. All three patients were transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Friday, April 20th

At 3:36 p.m., Engine 106 and Monrovia Paramedic Squad 101 responded to a medical assist in the 400 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire crews evaluated an elderly female feeling weak and dizzy. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene including intravenous access, 12-lead cardiac monitoring, and oxygen therapy. The patient was transported to Methodist Hospital of Southern California for further evaluation and treatment.

Saturday, April 21st


At 1:48 p.m., Engine 106 responded, as part of an automatic aid agreement, to a brush fire in the City of Montebello. E106 was assigned to Division Alpha and assisted with an extended hose lay into the brush. The fire was contained at approximately 23 acres with no structures damaged. Engine 106 worked on the Alpha flank performing mop up operations until released from the incident at 8:00 p.m. Arcadia worked alongside multiple agencies including Vernon, Los Angeles County, Montebello, San Gabriel, and Monrovia Fire Departments.




Training

During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 347 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Activity

During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 40 hours of volunteer services. Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their time to assist the Department with administrative, fire prevention, and miscellaneous duties.
