Arcadia Fire Department Weekly Report for week of July 9 to July 15, 2017

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of July 9 to July 15, 2017. The following is a breakdown of incident types recorded for this time period:

Sunday, July 9th

 At 4:39 p.m., Battalion 105 and Sierra Madre Fire Department responded to the 400 block of East San Gabriel Court, Sierra Madre, on a house fire. Fire crews arrived to find light smoke in the attic of a single family residence. Further investigation found a faulty electrical attic fan creating smoke. Power to the fan was disconnected and the scene was released to the homeowner.

Monday, July 10th

 At 12:08 p.m., Engine 705, Monrovia Squad 101, and Cole Schaefer Ambulance responded to the intersection of South Baldwin Avenue and Woodruff Avenue on an auto versus bicyclist traffic collision. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a 63-year-old male with minor injuries after colliding with a vehicle. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures at the scene including oxygen therapy, spinal immobilization assessment, cardiac monitoring, and pain management. The patient was transported to Methodist Hospital of Southern California for further evaluation and treatment.

Tuesday, July 11th

 At 1:12 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to the 500 block of West Live Oak Avenue on a medical assist. Fire crews arrived to find an 89-year-old female in an altered level of consciousness after a trip and fall. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene including intravenous access, 12-lead cardiac monitoring, and full spinal immobilization. The patient was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Wednesday, July 12th

 At 8:01 a.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and Santa Anita Avenue on a traffic collision. Upon arrival, fire crews found a vehicle that had collided with a deer. Several airbags in the vehicle discharged causing minor injuries to the female driver who declined medical treatment and transport. The deceased deer was released to animal control officers.

Thursday, July 13th

 At 7:43 a.m., Engine 705 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to the 700 block of Estrella Avenue on a medical assist. Fire personnel evaluated an elderly female experiencing shortness of breath and feeling weak. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene including oxygen therapy, 12-lead cardiac monitoring, intravenous access, and drug therapy. The patient was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Friday, July 14th

 At 8:07 p.m., Engine 705, Rescue Ambulance 105, and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to the skate park at Bonita Park on a reported explosion. Fire crews arrived to find two juveniles with injuries resulting from a powerful firework explosion. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures to a 13-year-old male including intravenous access, administration of pain medication, and controlling bleeding with a military tourniquet. He was transported to Los Angeles County+USC Pediatric Trauma Center. A 17-year-old male was treated for burns to his arm and chest and was transported to Methodist Hospital of Southern California. Arcadia Police remained on scene for investigation.

Saturday, July 15th

 At 10:15 a.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to the 00 block of West Orange Grove Avenue on a medical assist. Upon arrival, fire crews found a 22-year-old male with neck pain and road rash after falling from his bicycle at a high rate of speed. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene including full spinal immobilization and intravenous access. The patient was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Strike Team Responses

This week the Arcadia Fire Department continued to provide assistance to large wildland fires burning in the State of California.

On Saturday, July 8th, Engine 105 was deployed to the Whittier Fire above Goleta, California, as part of Strike Team XLC 1202A. Fire crews performed structure protection measures and mop up on various sections of the fire. The team returned to Arcadia on Monday, July 17th.

On Friday, July 7th, OES Engine 343 was deployed to the Alamo Fire outside of Santa Maria, California, as part of Strike Team OES 1801A. Fire crews performed mop up and perimeter control. The team returned to Arcadia on Friday,

July 14th.

The Arcadia Fire Department continues to provide the same level of service to the community when strike teams are deployed by placing reserve equipment into service. The City is reimbursed for all costs associated with deploying a strike team, such as personnel backfill and equipment usage.

Volunteer Activity

During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 52 hours of volunteer services. Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their time to assist the Department with administrative, fire prevention, and miscellaneous duties.

Training

During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 238 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.
