Arcadia Fire Department Weekly Report for the week of January 14 – January 20, 2018

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of January 14 – January 20, 2018. The following is a breakdown of incident types recorded for this time period:

Sunday, January 14th

At 12:23 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105 and Battalion 105, along with units from Pasadena and Los Angeles County Fire Departments responded to a reported apartment house fire in the 500 block of West Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire crews noticed a strong smell of smoke. Further investigation determined food was left cooking in an unoccupied apartment. The burnt food was found before it could catch fire. A ventilation fan was used to remove smoke from the apartment.

Monday, January 15th

At 11:28 p.m., Truck 105 responded to a police assist in the 1400 block of Carmelita Place. Fire crews arrived to find Arcadia Police on scene, conducting an investigation, and requesting use of a ladder to retrieve evidence from a rooftop. Fire personnel remained on scene until the task was completed.

Tuesday, January 16th

At 3:09 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist on Magnolia Lane. Fire crews arrived to find a male patient in full cardiac arrest. The patient met local protocol and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Arcadia Police remained on scene for follow up.

Wednesday, January 17th

At 12:59 p.m., Engine 107 and Battalion 105 responded to a gas main leak in the 300 block of South Madison Avenue, Monrovia. Fire crews arrived to find a major gas leak coming from a sheared line that fed a gas meter, prompting the evacuation of nearby residents. Fire personnel stood by with a protection line until the problem was mitigated. The incident was released to Southern California Gas Company representatives.

Thursday, January 18th

At 10:33 a.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 200 block of Santa Cruz Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a male patient experiencing an altered mental status and shortness of breath. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene including oxygen therapy, 12-lead cardiac monitoring, intravenous access, medication therapy, and blood glucose monitoring. The patient was transported to Methodist Hospital of Southern California for further evaluation and treatment.

Friday, January 19th

At 7:37 p.m., E106 responded to a vehicle fire in the 00 block of East Duarte Road. Fire crews arrived to find a vehicle with minimal smoke coming from the engine compartment. Fire personnel extinguished the fire with a dry chemical extinguisher. Arcadia Police also responded to the scene and requested towing service.

Saturday, January 20th

At 8:52 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist at the Santa Anita Race Track, 285 West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire crews found SART medics treating a male patient with multiple injuries after being bucked by a horse. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene including full spinal immobilization, intravenous access, 12-lead cardiac monitoring, and oxygen therapy. The patient was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Training

During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 412 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Activity

During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 36 hours of volunteer services. Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their time to assist the Department with administrative, fire prevention, and miscellaneous duties.
