8 rain-related calls in 5 1/2 hours

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Dec. 5 – Dec. 11, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, December 5 In a five-hour period, beginning at 5:36 p.m. until 11:14 p.m., the Arcadia Fire Department responded to eight (8) rain related incidents ranging from numerous traffic collisions to arcing electrical transformers. The most serious of the incidents was a traffic collision on the 210 freeway involving an overturned vehicle. One patient was treated and transported to an area trauma center for further evaluation and treatment.

Monday, December 6 At 9:52 p.m., Engine 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Truck 105, and Battalion 105 responded to a traffic collision in the 1800 block of South Santa Anita Avenue.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found a single overturned vehicle with two patients trapped inside. Truck 105 personnel extricated the two patients utilizing vehicle stabilization equipment and the Jaws of Life hydraulic tools.  The two patients received basic life support measures at the scene.  Fire crews assisted in vehicle fluid and street clean up and stood by for tow companies during vehicle removal. The scene was released to Arcadia Police.

Tuesday, December 7 At 4:27 p.m., Engine 106, with units from the Pasadena and Los Angeles County Fire Departments, responded to a reported brush fire in the 1700 block of North Alta Dena Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found dissipating smoke in the area of the park. After further investigation, fire personnel determined the smoke was coming from a Pasadena Police training drill at their training facility.

Wednesday, December 8 At 1:40 p.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to the intersection of Virginia Road and North Santa Anita Avenue to a traffic collision involving a bicycle and a vehicle.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found a 9-year old female with an arm injury.  Fire personnel splinted the arm and released the patient to her parents for follow up with their personal physician.

Thursday, December 9 At 3:38 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a reported traffic collision in the 600 block of West Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a three-vehicle traffic collision with three patients. Fire personnel evaluated and treated the patients at the scene for minor traumatic injuries. All three patients refused to be transported to an area emergency room and each of them signed a medical release.

Friday, December 10 At 7:11 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 400 block of South Baldwin Avenue.   Upon arrival, fire personnel found a 50-year old male patient suffering from a severe headache.  Fire personnel treated and transported the patient to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Saturday, December 11 At 10:27 p.m., Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 2700 block of Huntington Drive in the City of San Marino.  Upon arrival, fire personnel assisted San Marino Engine 91 with the treatment of a 15-year old male who had fainted.  Fire personnel provided advanced life support and transported the patient to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 436 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 10 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the department with administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
