The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Jan. 30 – Feb. 5, 2011. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, January 30 At 9:54 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 200 block of East Live Oak Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated and treated a male patient who was complaining of chest pain and shortness of breath. The patient received advanced life support measures at the scene including a 12-lead Electro Cardio Gram and drug therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Monday, January 31 At 9:10 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical call in the 100 block of East Live Oak Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an elderly patient who had experienced a syncopal episode. The patient received advanced life support measures on scene and was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Tuesday, February 1 At 10:06 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 100 block of West Pamela Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an elderly male suffering from a seizure. Fire personnel ensured the patients safety, treated, and transported this patient to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Thursday, February 3 * At 1:40 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical call in the 2800 block of Caroline Way. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an elderly male suffering from chest pain with a sudden onset. The patient received advanced life support measures at the scene including a 12-lead Electro Cardio Gram and drug therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

* At 9:23 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 00 block of Genoa Street. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated and treated a male patient who was complaining of severe abdominal pain and shortness of breath. The patient received advanced life support measures at the scene including 12-lead Electro Cardio Gram and drug therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Friday, February 4 At 9:42 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to assist the Arcadia Police Department in the 400 block of East Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel were placed in a staging area while Arcadia Police investigated a firearm discharge and possible gunshot victim. Several suspects were detained, no gunshot victim materialized.

Saturday, February 5 At 3:23 p.m., Engine 106 responded to a reported fire alarm in the 600 block of West Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a three story medical building with nothing showing. After further investigation, fire personnel made entry and found extreme heat inside three units. Firefighters found a mal-functioning heater, turned off the power to the heater, and opened up the units to cool them to a normal temperature. The scene was then released to the owner.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 526.75 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 12 hours of volunteer activities. Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week and assisted the department with processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports and performing administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau. It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
