55 EMS/Rescue calls for Fire Dept.

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Dec. 12 – Dec. 18, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, December 12 At 10:29 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 1100 block of South Fifth Avenue.Upon arrival, fire personnel found a 50-year old female in full cardiac arrest. Fire personnel provided advanced life support, including cardiac defibrillation, at the scene and transported the patient to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Monday, December 13 At 3:28 p.m., Engine 106, Engine 105, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, and units from the Monrovia Fire Department, responded to a reported boiler fire in the 400 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered a boiler in a local business overheating and creating a strong odor of smoke. Fire personnel utilized a thermal imaging camera to check for fire extension in the surrounding walls and disconnected the power to the boiler. Truck 105 personnel provided horizontal ventilation with gas blowers.

Tuesday, December 14 At 11:50 a.m., Engine 107, Engine 105, Engine 106, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, and one unit from the Monrovia Fire Department, responded to a reported structure fire in the 500 block of Santa Rosa Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a single story residential dwelling with heavy smoke coming from the entire structure. Fire personnel forced entry to the front door, found the seat of the fire, conducted primary and secondary searches for possible victims, extinguished, ventilated, and investigated the fire.The preliminary cause of the fire was determined to be electrical in nature with an estimated loss of approximately $160,000.00.

Wednesday, December 15 At 12:26 p.m., Engine 106, Engine 105, Engine 107 Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, Battalion 105, with units from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, responded to a reported structure fire in the 800 block of West Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered light smoke coming from a commercial business caused by a small fire in an appliance within the structure. Fire personnel shut off the natural gas to the appliance, checked for fire extension with a thermal imaging camera, and removed the smoke from the structure.

Thursday, December 16 At 3:45 p.m., Engine 107 responded to an investigation in the 00 block of East Floral Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a 5-gallon container filled with an unknown substance near the curb on a grass parkway. After further investigation, a resident stated she had observed the container around noon and called 9-1-1 when she began to detect an odor coming from the container. Fire personnel cordoned off the area and requested a Los Angeles County Health Hazardous Materials (Haz Mat) unit to respond. Prior to the Haz Mat unit’s arrival, an employee from a company performing street maintenance returned to the location to collect the container. He removed the container to his truck, abating the potential hazard. The Haz Mat unit was cancelled.

Friday December 17 At 5:25 p.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 1700 block of Oakwood Avenue. Upon arrival, a caretaker told fire personnel that the 14-month old child had experienced seizure-like activity. Fire personnel provided advanced life support at the scene and transported the patient to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Saturday , December 18 At 6:18 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 400 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated and treated a pregnant female patient who experienced a near syncopal episode with abdominal pain. The patient was administered oxygen therapy and a 12-lead electrocardiogram. The patient stated that the pain had subsided and that she was waiting for a family member to transport her home. The patient refused additional treatment and transport and was advised of the potential medical ramifications.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 328 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 6 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the department with administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
