3-story mall store ablaze

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Jan. 9 – 15, 2011. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, January 9 At 11:12 a.m., Engine 107, Engine 105, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, and Battalion 105, with units from the Monrovia Fire Department, responded to a reported structure fire in the 300 block of East Floral Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered light smoke inside the structure, caused by a small fire occurring in an electrical outlet. Fire personnel checked for fire extension with a thermal imaging camera and removed the smoke from the structure. The scene was released to the property owner.

Monday, January 10 At 10:31 a.m., Engine 106, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105 and units from the Los Angeles County and Monrovia Fire Departments responded to a reported natural gas leak in a residential structure in the 2800 block of Longley Way. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an unoccupied residential structure with a gas leak coming from the kitchen stove. Fire personnel forced entry into the structure, turned the gas off to the stove, and secured the structure.

Tuesday, January 11 At 5:18 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 700 block of West Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated and treated a female patient experiencing extreme hyperglycemia. The patient received advanced life support measures at the scene including a glucose reading, oxygen therapy and an intravenous line. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Wednesday, January 12 At 2:05 p.m., Engine 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, and Battalion 105 responded to a request for assistance from the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department in the area of Highland Oaks and Elkins Avenues. Upon arrival, fire personnel were placed on stand-by for medical and fire suppression needs for four persons who had chained themselves to oak trees.  The incident was resolved and Arcadia units were placed back in service.

Thursday, January 13 At 5:52 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a traffic collision with injuries in the intersection of South Baldwin Avenue and Camino Real Avenue.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found two vehicles had been involved in a traffic collision with two people injured.  Fire personnel assessed both patients who refused further treatment or transport.

Friday, January 14 * At 10:37 a.m., Engine 105, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, along with Monrovia Engine 101 and Truck 101, responded to a reported structure fire in the area of Santa Anita Avenue and Foothill Boulevard.  Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered a resident in the 900 block of North Santa Anita utilizing a barbeque in his side yard. There was no structure fire at the location, only a large amount of smoke from a properly utilized barbeque. * At 2:50 p.m., Engine 106, Engine 105, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, Battalion 105, with units from the Monrovia and Los Angeles County Fire Departments, responded to a commercial structure fire in the 400 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a three story retail store with smoke coming from the roof. After further investigation, fire personnel found smoke on all three floors of the structure, a partial electrical power outage and a large electrical transformer on fire. Firefighters extinguished the fire, checked the elevators to ensure no patrons were trapped inside, and requested Southern California Edison to the scene. Mall security provided a fire watch for the entire store until the power could be restored to the occupancy.

Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 10 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the Department with administrative duties in the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and Department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
