Teen rescued from cliff fall

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Aug. 8-14, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, August 8 At 1:52 p.m., USAR 106 responded to a mountain rescue in the City of Monrovia at Monrovia Canyon Park. USAR 106 personnel assisted Monrovia Fire Department personnel in packaging and carrying out a teenage patient who fell twelve feet from a cliff while hiking near a waterfall in the park. Once the patient was removed from the wilderness, she was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Monday, August 9 At 1:57 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical emergency in the 100 block of East Live Oak Ave.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found an elderly patient with an altered mental status. Crews provided treatment and the caretaker for the patient refused further treatment and stated he would follow up with the patients’ private physician.

Tuesday, August 10 At 12:39 p.m., Engine 106 responded to a reported baby locked in a vehicle in the 300 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found the baby locked inside the vehicle with the keys in the ignition. Fire personnel gained access into the vehicle utilizing specialized tools and the baby was removed. The baby was assessed and released unharmed to its mother.

Wednesday, August 11 At 2:25 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a reported emergency medical assist in the 2500 block of South Third Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an elderly male having difficulty breathing. Fire personnel, assessed the patient’s oxygen saturation, applied oxygen, and treated him with appropriate medications. The patient’s condition improved and he was transported to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Thursday, August 12 At 4:02 p.m., Engine 105 responded to a reported fire alarm in the 400 block of East Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a six-story office building with nothing showing from the street. Fire personnel made entry and searched every office on every floor, finding a light smell of smoke in the electrical room. Firefighters worked with the building supervisor to correct an electrical malfunction. The scene was released to building management for further repairs.

Friday, August 13 At 9:15 p.m., Truck 105 responded with the Arcadia Police Department for a welfare check in the 1200 block of Temple City Boulevard. Upon arrival, fire personnel laddered a second story apartment to check the status of a resident. Once inside, it was determined the resident did not require any assistance.

Saturday, August 14 At 12:59 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, with units from the Monrovia and Los Angeles County Fire Departments, responded to a structure fire in the 400 block of East Rodell Place. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a single story, residential structure with smoke and fire showing from the backyard. After further investigation, fire personnel found the resident was using a flammable liquid to burn a tree stump in his backyard. Firefighters extinguished the fire and educated the owner as to the dangers of using flammable liquids.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 350 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 10 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the department with administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
