Society hears about forest, WWII POW

Nearly 50 attendees were treated to a presentation featuring hundreds of photos about the history of the San Gabriel Mountains from prehistoric times through Native Americans, the gold rush, and more recently the hiking trails that locals enjoy.

The U.S. Forestry Service‘s Darrell Vance, Heritage Program Manager for Angeles National Forest, was the featured speaker at the Arcadia Historical Society‘s member program at Thursday, Jan. 31, at the Lutheran Church of the Cross, 66 W. Duarte Road. Free refreshments and a new Society 6-foot stand-up banner were provided courtesy of the Friends of the Society.

The next Society program for members will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 9 at the Arcadia Association of Realtors, 601 S. First Avenue. Ms Wanda Damberg will share her experiences of being in a World War II Japanese Prisoner of War camp in the Phillippines. Wanda and her family were interned, first at Santo Tomas and then at Los Banos, for more than 37 months. She will share her compelling story of courage and deliverance. Details on flier below (followed by donation form for the classic police car sponsored by the Society)…
