Sneak peek at AHS play Curtains

The 1,200-seat Arcadia Performing Arts Center is sold out for Friday night’s performance (March 21) of the Arcadia High School Theatre Department’s musical comedy “Curtains,” and only a few tickets are left for the closing performance on Saturday at 4 p.m. Good seats are still available for opening night this Thursday, March 20. Hurry and get your tickets — 50% off the few remaining $30 VIP tickets for opening night Thursday courtesy of Arcadia’s Best with promotional code of 388 (VIP tickets for Friday and Saturday shows sold out) —  at www.arcadiastage.com or at Denny’s Restaurant in Arcadia.

The following video (first in YouTube followed below by Flash video formats) offers a three-minute teaser of the play from a dress rehearsal last Saturday, which once again features very impressive performances by the talented students under the direction of Steven Volpe and a remarkable number of fun and varied song and dance numbers, most of which offer an homage to classic Broadway shows such as Oklahoma and musicals like “Singin’ in the Rain.” Music director Stephen Pu has returned to create another dynamic presentation while professional dancer/choreographer Jean Michelle Sayeg’s input (national tours of Cats and Camelot) provides choreography that has the students looking like a professional road show troupe. <Story contunues below the following videos…>

Get the Flash Player to see this content. This musical is unique for the theatre department’s plays at the new Arcadia Performing Arts Center on the high school campus because the muscial score comes not from students behind the stage but rather from an iPad app, which Volpe told ArcadiasBest.com allows students to utilize the apps on their own iPads and smart phones to listen and practice their own specific tracks and segments of the songs that apply to them as often and whenever they choose. Pu is anxious to add another new technology for the next show which will allow him to conduct the music on the app with arm movements to benefit student singers on stage as if he is playing a game on the Nintendo Wii to simulate conducting musicans in an orchestra pit.

The play is presented in the beautiful and spacious Arcadia Performing Arts Center (APAC). This talented cast of high school students has won national and state theatre competitions, as well as performed on stage at The Pantages during the Jerry Hermann Awards Show for High School Musicals. Susan Egan, the Belle of Broadway, recently invited these gifted students to perform with her in concert at the APAC on March 1st. Moreover, the productions put on by the ArcadiaStage director, Steven Volpe, are not what you might expect from a high school. The sets, the costume design, and the talent of these actors are simply amazing. In fact, their shows for the last several years have always sold out prior to opening night.

Their upcoming spring production, Curtains, is not just a mystery, not just a musical, not just a comedy, but all three rolled into one hilarious toe-tapping event! When the supremely untalented star of Robbin’ Hood of the Old West is murdered during her opening night curtain call, it’s up to Detective Frank Cioffi, portrayed by the very capable Liam Swan, to solve the case, save the show, and maybe even find true love… as long as he doesn’t get himself killed in the process.

Tickets for this fun show can be purchased anytime at Denny’s® Restaurant in Arcadia, online at www.arcadiastage.com, in person at the Arcadia Community Center, or from any Arcadia High School Theatre Student. Tickets are $30 for VIP, $15 for General Admission, and $10 for Students and Seniors.
