The Alumnae Panhellenic in our area began in 1939. It included ladies from Arcadia, Monrovia and Duarte. Some of the first meetings took place in Bradbury. It has had several name changes through the years to be more inclusive of the surrounding community. It was called Foothill Area Panhellenic in 1974. In 2006 it became San Gabriel Valley Alumnae Panhellenic Association.
The object of the San Gabriel Valley Alumnae Panhellenic Association is to develop and maintain sorority life and interfraternal relations by:
Promoting interfraternity friendship and cooperation
Publicizing the high ideals, purpose and accomplishments of the sorority community
Stimulating interest and participation of alumnae members in National Panhellenic Conference sororities
Advancing interest in community service and philanthropic efforts
Its mission became to offer Scholarships for young ladies attending a four-year college that had National Sororities in 1939. There are 26 different National Sororities Nationwide.
To raise funds, it has had many different activities:
Social gatherings including summer garden parties and Bridge
Badge Day Luncheons with interesting speakers
Monitoring for SAT tests
Bingo
Dining at designated restaurant where percentage of sales goes to its organization.
Through the years it has found scholarship recipients by going to Career Day at High School campus and offering applications for them to apply. Currently applicants are able to find applications on the Internet. A Scholarship Committee then reviews applications. The most qualified receive a Scholarship.
Since 1939, 170 Scholarships have been awarded and made a difference in the recipients lives.
