Mockingbird book event tonight

Matt Denny’s, Creative World, and resident Rex Wong have joined Chyten Educational Services, Wienerschnitzel, and The Book Rack in providing support for tonight’s first citywide One Community, One Book program celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird, presented by Arcadia’s Best in partnership with the Arcadia Historical Society‘s quarterly membership program, and the Arcadia Chinese Association.

All attendees who sign in and provide their e-mail address from 6 p.m. – 6:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, at the Arcadia Masonic Center, 50 W. Duarte Road (next to Arcadia Public Library), will receive a free collector’s series bookmark and button. The first 50 will also receive an insulated cloth “Shop Arcadia” bag (one per family).

A historic Arcadia police patrol car will also be on display prior to and during the dinner hour.

The community potluck dinner, plus a limited number of free chili dogs and free drinks and desserts will be served. Each family should bring prepared food that will serve eight others, or at least as many as are in your party. Table service and utensils will be provided.

There will be a few announcements, including project updates from the Arcadia Historical Society, and the first of many raffle prizes to be handed out during the evening ranging from special edition DVDs to artistic cloth bags and free art classes donated by Creative World, 524 S. First Ave., plus gift certificates and other surprises.

Then at 7 p.m. will begin an interactive group discussion of the classic novel and the presentation of the winning entries in the Creative Interpretation Contest for students and adults will begin. Prizes for the best entries valued at up to $100 will be awarded to adults, high school students, and middle school students.

Winners in attendance will be given the opportunity to read and discuss their essay or poem.
