Arcadia’s Methodist Hospital is 14th highest-rated out of 76 Los Angeles County hospitals. In a new Consumer Reports ranking of hospitals based on a federal government recent Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey of more than 1 million patients nationwide and more than 300 Methodist patients, the Arcadia-based hospital achieved an overall score of 69 out of 100 and had average patient costs (APC) of $4,089. Huntington Hospital in Pasadena ranks #2 in L.A. County (81, $4,083) behind Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in Whittier (83, $3,774). For the purposes of comparison to high-profile hospitals, Cedars-Senai Medical Center (#11) near Beverly Hills in Los Angeles ranks one point higher with a 70 but average patient costs are nearly 60% higher at $6,524. St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica (#17) ranks only one point lower with a 68 yet has an APC nearly 45% higher than Methodist at $5,883. Likewise, UCLA Medical Center (#18) with a score of 68 has an APC about 20% higher at $4,835. The 300 or more patients surveyed about their recent stay at Methodist Hospital rated it in eight categories, including doctor communication (95% said doctors always or usually communicate well); nurse communication (92%); pain control (91% said pain always/usually controlled); room cleanliness (89% said rooms and bathrooms always/usually clean); and quietness (82% said area around their room always/usually quiet). Three areas that scored below 80% were attentiveness of hospital staff (79% said they always/usually received help as soon as they needed); discharge instructions (74% said they were given info about what to expect after leaving); and communications about medications (66% said staff always/usually explained about new medications). Other high-profile hospitals: Motion Picture and Television Hospital in Woodland Hills ranks #3 and USC University Hospital is 5th). The highest-ranking Kaiser Foundation Hospital – in Baldwin Park – is rated 19th. Near the bottom are Greater El Monte Community Hospital (70th), San Gabriel Valley Medical Center in San Gabriel (71st), Alhambra Hospital Medical Center (72nd), and Whittier Hospital Medical Center (73rd).
