Man found dead in car

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Aug. 29 – Sept. 4, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, August 29 At 12:02 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 200 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel treated a young male patient complaining of neck and back pain from a sports injury. The patient was placed in full spinal immobilization and was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Monday, August 30 At 6:47 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to an emergency medical assist in the 400 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an elderly female with an altered level of consciousness and severe respiratory distress. Fire personnel provided advanced life support and transported this patient to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Tuesday, August 31 At 2:15 a.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical call at the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and Santa Anita Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel encountered a 46-year old male experiencing rib pain.  Fire personnel treated the patient and transported the patient to a local hospital for further treatment and evaluation.

Wednesday, September 1 At 6:52 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a report of a male slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle in the area of Arcadia Avenue and South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an unconscious and unresponsive elderly male in the driver’s seat of a parked vehicle. Fire personnel assessed the patient and determined the patient was deceased. The scene was released to the Arcadia Police Department for their investigation.

Thursday, September 2 At 10:20 a.m., Truck 105 responded to a fire alarm activation in the 400 block of South Baldwin Avenue.  Upon arrival, fire personnel investigated the reason for the detector activation and found it was due to a malfunctioning air conditioning motor.  Fire personnel shut off the power to the motor and advised the occupant to have the system repaired by a licensed electrician.

Friday, September 3 At 6:18 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 1400 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel treated a male patient experiencing chest pain and shortness of breath. The patient received advanced life support measures including a 12-lead electrocardiogram and medication for pain management. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Saturday, September 4 At 3:49 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 300 block of North Santa Anita Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a 50-year old male with abdominal pain. The patient stated he had a history of cancer and was out of his pain medication. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 501 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 6 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the department with administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
