Hundreds celebrate ALA’s 60th

Assistance League of Arcadia, a 347 all-volunteer member-driven nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, welcomed over 230 guests and members to their Chapter House on March 20 to celebrate 60 years of service to the community.

Guests were greeted at the door by President Keppie Sullivan, while chairmen of the event, Glenda Vanni and Donna Rey, circulated greeting attendees.

The Chapter House was filled with balloons and festive displays of Assistance League’s various community projects, with members at each table answering questions.

Danielson Creations, run by member Blennie Danielson, provided a lavish buffet.


Tours of Assistance League’s signature program, Operation School Bell®, were available to all guests. The Operation School Bell program provides new school clothing to identified children of families in need. This program serves the public school districts in Alhambra, Arcadia, Duarte, Rosemead, San Gabriel, and Temple City, as well as the Almansor Center.


Proclamations honoring Assistance League’s 60 years of service to Arcadia and the surrounding communities were given by the Offices of:

  1. Judy Chu, Congresswomen

  2. Ed Hernandez, California State Senator

  3. Ed Chau, California State Assembly member

  4. Michael D. Antonovich, Los Angeles County Supervisor

  5. Mickey Segal, Mayor of Arcadia


Among special guests were:

  1. Dr. Joel Shawn, Superintendent of Arcadia School District

  2. Mary Beth Hayes, Director of Library and Museum Services

  3. Dominic Lazzaretto, City Manager

  4. Mike Vercillo, Police Community Service Officer

  5. Brent Forsee, principal of Arcadia High School

  6. City Clerk and Arcadia Historical Society President Gene Glasco, who was also Crossing Guard for the event as a Volunteer in Patrol (VIP)

  7. Vince Foley, Volunteer Policeman and Crossing Guard for the event


The Assistance League will be jointly honored April 17 by the Arcadia Chamber of Commerce and Arcadia Historical Society as an Arcadia Business Icon at the Chamber’s monthly Networking Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. in the Sunset Room of the Santa Anita Golf Course.


Assistance League of Arcadia is proud and grateful for the continual community support and outstanding recognition. This special event was the perfect opportunity to thank Assistance League of Arcadia for its 60 years of dedicated service to Arcadia and the surrounding communities.
