Horse kicks two men to life support

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of March 31 through April 6, 2013. Sunday, March 31 At 9:46 a.m., Engine 105 responded to reported rubbish fire in the 600 block of East Live Oak Avenue. Fire crews arrived to find a dumpster on fire with bystanders attempting to extinguish the fire with buckets of water. An inch-and-a-half hose line was pulled from the engine and used to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire was undetermined.

Monday, April 1 At 9:15 a.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 1200 block of Rancho Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a female patient who was exhibiting symptoms of a stroke. The patient received advanced life support at the scene; oxygen therapy, 12 lead cardiac monitoring, intravenous access, and blood glucose monitoring. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Tuesday, April 2 At 5:09 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical call in the 200 block of West Huntington Drive. Fire crews arrived on scene to find one male patient suffering from head pain after an injury sustained one week ago. Paramedics assessed the patient and performed advanced life support interventions, including cardiac monitoring and establishing venous access. The patient was transported to a local hospital for further treatment and evaluation.

Wednesday, April 3 At 5:58 p.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 1000 block of Leandra Lane. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a female patient who was suffering from right hip pain from a fall. The patient received advanced life support at the scene; oxygen therapy, intravenous access, drug therapy for pain management, and immobilization of the hip. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist for further evaluation and treatment.

Thursday, April 4 At 10:03 a.m., Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105 and Battalion 105 responded to a traffic collision with a report of an overturned vehicle in the intersection of Second Avenue and Camino Real Avenue. Fire crews arrived on scene to find a three vehicle accident with four patients. Additional equipment was requested; including Rescue Ambulance 106, Engine 105, Monrovia Squad 101 and two private ambulances from Cole Schaefer Ambulance. Two patients required advanced life support interventions and were transported in separate ambulances to the closest trauma center. The two remaining patients required basic life support interventions and were transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital.

Friday, April 5 At 7:32 a.m., Engine 106, Rescue Ambulance 106 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 200 block of West Huntington Drive. Fire crews arrived to find two patients. The first patient was a 62 year old male suffering from an altered mental status after being bucked from a horse. Paramedics provided advance life support measures on scene; 12 lead electrocardiogram, intravenous access, full spinal immobilization and oxygen therapy. The patient was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital Trauma Center for further evaluation. The second patient was a 34 year old male suffering from rib pain after being kicked by the same horse. Paramedics provided basic life support measures on scene; including full spinal immobilization. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation.

Saturday, April 6 At 5:06 p.m., Truck 105 and San Marino Rescue Ambulance 91 were dispatched to a traffic collision at Baldwin Avenue and Colorado Boulevard. Fire crews arrived on scene to find a two vehicle traffic collision with three patients. Additional resources were requested to the scene. Two patients had injuries requiring advanced life support interventions and transport to a trauma center. The third patient required basic life support and was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 390 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 13 hours of volunteer activities. Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their time to assist the Department with Fire Prevention Bureau and Fire Administration duties.
