Free Wienerschnitzel, “One Book”

Arcadia’s newest Wienerschnitzel at Westfield Santa Anita mall is supporting the Arcadia’s Best “One Community, One Book” program and Creative Interpretation Contest for all ages by providing free hot dogs and chili dogs to attendees.

The Wienerschnitzel mascot will also make an appearance during the potluck dinner hour from 6 p.m. – 6:45 p.m., all courtesy of Wienerschnitzel owner Ameet Toor.

The deadline for contest entries is Friday, Oct. 15, with all entries to be submitted between 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. at the Arcadia Masonic Center, 50 W. Duarte Road (next door to Arcadia Public Library).

The book to be discussed at Arcadia’s first city-wide book club program is the classic Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Prizes for the best entries valued at up to $100 (rules and entry form below) will be awarded to adults, high school students, and middle school students, following a community potluck dinner, free desserts and drinks, a group discussion of the book, and raffle prizes including special commemorative DVD editions of the movie, coffee mugs, and more. And all attendees who sign in will get a free bookmark and button.

The program is presented by Arcadia’s Best, including Sho Tay and Carol Libby, in partnership with Arcadia Historical Society‘s fall membership program, the Arcadia Chinese Association, and Arcadia Masonic Center.

In addition to Wienerschnitzel, Chyten Educational Services, at 1012 S. Baldwin Ave., is also supporting the event with a cash sponsorship to help offset a portion of the costs.

The entirely free program will begin with a community potluck dinner similar to those that were common during the Depression era setting of To Kill a Mockingbird — each family should bring prepared food that will serve eight others, or at least as many as are in your party. Table service and utensils will be provided, along with free desserts and drinks.

Entries to the Creative Interpretation Contest will be displayed at the program — express your feelings about the book or any aspect of it:

characters, message, writing style, social significance — through the medium in which you are most comfortable and talented, such as an essay, review, poem, drawing/painting, video, PowerPoint, or even a dramatic interpretation or song (the latter two of which you would on DVD for judging and be invited to perform at the program).

Raffle prizes will be announced throughout the evening. Following the book discussion, winners of the Creative Interpretation will be announced (rules and entry form below).

If you cannot obtain your own copy of the book through the Library or book stores, Arcadia’s Best will make available a limited number of discounted copies of the 50th anniversary paperback edition of the novel courtesy of The Book Rack.

These discounted editions of the book are only available by contacting Scott Hettrick of Arcadia’s Best by e-mail: Hreporter@aol.com or cell: 626-485-8783. This 87-second video of The Book Rack, 204 S. First Avenue, introduces owner Karen Kropp and the wide selection of used and new books available to purchase or trade.
