Fire Department Weekly Report - week of June 12 – 18, 2022

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of June 12 – 18, 2022. The following is a breakdown of incident types recorded for this time period:
Sunday, June 12 At 2:32 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 900 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a 70-year- old female patient who was suffering from flu-like symptoms. The patient received advanced life support including cardiac monitoring, glucose check, and intravenous access. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Monday, June 13 At 4:28 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 were dispatched to a medical incident in the 100 block of Santa Anita Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a 35- year-old female patient who was in labor. The patient received a full medical evaluation which included a 12-lead electrocardiogram and intravenous therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation. Tuesday, June 14 At 6:22 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to an overdose in the 100 block of Campus Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a 26-year-old male patient who had an altered level of consciousness from possibly using illicit drugs. The patient received advanced life support including oxygen therapy, 12-lead cardiac monitoring, intravenous access, and medication therapy. The patient was transported to San Gabriel Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment. Wednesday, June 15 At 1:42 a.m., Engine 105, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, and Battalion 105 responded to a reported person trapped below grade in the area of Camino Real Avenue and El Monte Avenue. Firefighters found a female victim in a flood control channel. The victim was secured and removed from the flood control area with the use of ground ladders and a safety line. Paramedics evaluated the victim and found only minor injuries and abrasions. The patient denied further care and transport. Thursday, June 16 At 2:27 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a reported traffic collision in the 300 block of Colorado Boulevard. Firefighters arrived to find a single vehicle crashed into a power pole. The power pole, which supported high voltage power lines, was brought down by the accident and caused the power lines to come down. All lanes of Colorado Boulevard were shut down for hours. The driver was an 18-year-old male showing no signs of injury after the accident. Fire crews worked with Southern California Edison to evacuate and secure the area due to the threat of multiple high voltage power lines. Crews worked quickly to de-energize the power lines and the road remained closed for most of the day while crews removed the debris off the roadway.

Friday, June 17 At 2:02 p.m., Engine 105 and Engine 37 responded to a report of a multiple vehicle traffic collision on the westbound 210 Freeway. Fire crews arrived to find multiple vehicles involved in an accident after a cargo truck lost control causing considerable damage to all vehicles involved. One fuel tank was ripped open, and firefighters utilized a special material to seal the tank and leak. No significant injuries occurred but firefighters worked for over an hour to clear the freeway of damaged vehicles and debris. Saturday, June 18 At 12:25 p.m., Engine 107 and Pasadena Engine 37 were dispatched to a vehicle fire on the eastbound 210 Freeway. Upon arrival, fire crews found one vehicle with the engine compartment fully involved with fire. Fire crews utilized a 1 3⁄4” hose line and Class A foam to extinguish the fire. The owner of the vehicle remained on scene with California Highway Patrol.

Personnel Update Fire personnel made a final push with Fire Engineer training before the practical (hands- on) assessment on June 14. Five candidates were evaluated by fire personnel from across the region and all five successfully passed the examination. The test included pump operations and hydraulic calculations, vehicle pre-trip procedures, equipment troubleshooting (specifically a chainsaw), aerial ladder operations, and driving procedures. We are extremely proud of our personnel for putting the hours and hard work in training these individuals, and for the candidates working day in and day out preparing for the test. Our three new probationary firefighters are nearing their three-week onboarding training. More information on their progress will follow in next week’s report.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 439 hours of training. Some of the subjects include: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.
