Fire Department Weekly Report - week of July 24 – 30, 2022.

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of July 24 – 30, 2022. The following is a breakdown of incident types recorded for this time period:

Sunday, July 24 At 8:34 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, and Battalion 105 responded to a reported gas leak in the 400 block of West Le Roy Avenue. Upon arrival, firefighters found a vehicle that had collided with an outdoor shed containing a dryer with natural gas connection. Fire personnel secured the scene and shut down the gas to the residence. The Southern California Gas Company was notified of the incident. There were no injuries associated with the incident. Monday, July 25 At 6:10 p.m., Engine 107, Engine 106, Engine 105, Pasadena Engine 37, Truck 105, Monrovia Truck 101, Rescue Ambulance 106, and Battalion 105 responded to a reported house fire in the 1400 block of Oaklawn Road. Fire crews quickly found a fire isolated to the contents of the structure and began fire suppression. Fire crews ventilated the structure and completed a primary search of the affected building. The fire was quickly knocked down and no persons were injured during the incident.

Tuesday, July 26 At 12:47 p.m., Engine 107, Rescue Ambulance 105, Sierra Madre Engine 41 and Rescue Ambulance 41, and Battalion 105 responded to a report of drowning victims in the 1000 block of Oakwood Place in the city of Sierra Madre. Firefighters arrived and found two three-year-old male drowning victims. Paramedics initiated advanced life support measures including electrocardiograms, intraosseous access, medications, and airway management. Both victims were transported to USC Arcadia Hospital for further care. Wednesday, July 27 At 8:50 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 were dispatched for a reported person down near the intersection of West Colorado Boulevard and Vaquero Road. Firefighters arrived and found a person sleeping. The person denied medical assistance and aid for experiencing homelessness. Thursday, July 28 At 6:45 a.m., Engine 105, Engine 107, Monrovia Engine 102 and Truck 101, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, and Battalion 105 responded to a reported commercial structure fire in the 100 block of Alice Avenue. Upon investigation, fire crews found smoke that was generated from an overheated and failing air conditioning motor. The system was shut down, no structural damage occurred, and the incident was isolated to the mechanical unit itself.

Friday, July 29 At 9:34 p.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a three-vehicle traffic accident on the eastbound 210 Freeway at Baldwin Avenue. Paramedics evaluated a 41- year-old male patient who was suffering from eye pain. The patient received advanced life support including 12-lead cardiac monitoring, glucose check, and intravenous access. The patient was transported to Huntington Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Saturday, July 30 At 9:11 a.m., Engine 105 and Sierra Madre Rescue Ambulance 41 responded to a medical assist in the 800 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated an 83-year-old female patient who was suffering from chest pain. The patient received advanced life support including 12-lead cardiac monitoring, glucose check, and intravenous access with medication. The patient was transported to USC Arcadia Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Strike Team Deployment On Monday, July 25th, four members of the Fire Department were deployed to the Oak Fire in Mariposa County. Three members staffed the CalOES Type VI fire engine and one member who served as the Strike Team Leader trainee. They were part of a five-fire engine strike team from Sierra Madre, Compton, Torrance, and Long Beach designated as 1862F. This fire quickly grew to the largest active fire in the state of California for the current fire season last week. Last week, they were engaged in extinguishing hots spots, defending homes, and tactically patrolling assigned areas.

Personnel Update The Training Division remains busy with our probationary firefighters. Captain Olivarez led training this week focusing on fireground survival. Probationary firefighters were sent through a maze in a visual impaired environment. Members were taught and trained on different skills for self-rescue including disentanglement and tactile function. Captain Olivarez also planned and delivered other training for the Fire Department including various hose deployments and drills.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 426 hours of training. Some of the subjects include: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.
