Fire Department Weekly Report - week of July 17 to 23, 2022.

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of July 17 - 23, 2022. The following is a breakdown of incident types recorded for this time period:
Sunday, July 17 At 9:10 a.m., Engine 106 and Sierra Madre Rescue Ambulance 41 responded to a medical assist in the 900 block of Victoria Drive. Upon arrival, Fire personnel assessed a 94-year-old male suffering from head pain after a trip and fall. The patient received advanced life support including 12-lead cardiac monitoring, intravenous access, and glucose monitoring. The patient was transported to Huntington Memorial Trauma Center for further evaluation and treatment. Monday, July 18 At 11:18 a.m., Truck 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist on Santa Anita Avenue at Virginia Drive. Upon arrival, Fire personnel evaluated an 80-year- old male suffering from altered level of consciousness possibly caused by low blood sugar. The patient received advanced life support including 12-lead cardiac monitoring, intravenous access, glucose administration, and glucose monitoring. The patient did not want to be transported to a hospital and refused further evaluation. Tuesday, July 19 At 10:56 a.m., Engine 105 and Sierra Madre Rescue Ambulance 41 responded to the 200 block of West Huntington Drive for a person down. Firefighters arrived to find a 50-year- old male suffering from an altered level of consciousness. Firefighters initiated assessment of the patient with arriving paramedics assuming medical care and treatment. The patient was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital due to closer emergency rooms at full capacity. Wednesday, July 20 At 2:10 p.m., Engine 105 and Engine 106 responded to Arcadia City Hall for a vegetation fire at the soccer field. Fire crews arrived to find fire and heavy smoke in the hedges along the east side of the soccer field. Firefighters utilized hose lines to extinguish the fire, and chainsaws to cut down foliage to ensure extinguishment. Fire crews found what appeared to be an encampment hidden in the hedges within the fire area. No one was in the area at the time of the incident. The cause of the fire was determined to be unintentional. Thursday, July 21 At 9:33 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 500 block of South Santa Anita Avenue to find a 60-year-old female having difficulty breathing. The patient received advanced life support including 12-lead cardiac monitoring, intravenous access, and breathing treatments. The patient was transported to USC Arcadia Hospital. Friday, July 22

At 7:42p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to the intersection of Huntington Drive and Baldwin Avenue for a reported traffic collision. Fire crews investigated and found a non-injury traffic collision. During the traffic collision, a fire hydrant was hit and sheared off the ground. Firefighters isolated the water main and quickly shut the valves which prevented the gushing of water from the hydrant.
Saturday, July 23 At 6:58 p.m., Arcadia’s Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) 106 provided automatic aid to Monrovia Fire units for a lost person in the foothills. Fire crews initiated a search and rescue effort and found the victim at the top of a ridge. Once located, Los Angeles County Helicopter 11 rescued the victim from the mountain using a hoist. The victim was successfully rescued and brought to a safe location for further medical evaluation. Personnel Update This week was busy for the Training Division and for our Training Captain. Two (2) separate probationary Firefighter examinations were administered: a 3-month and a 6- month evaluation. Both probationary Firefighters were successful in passing their respective examinations. Testing included skills and knowledge in engine and truck operations including several hose lines and ladder deployments, forcible entry, apparatus inventory, rope rescue operations, and progressive hose lays for wildland operations.

Additionally, two (2) Firefighter/Paramedics were promoted to the rank of Fire Engineer this week and started their one-year probationary process. On-the-job training will continue for these individuals.

Currently, there remains one (1) Fire Engineer and three (3) Firefighter openings. Three (3) new probationary Firefighters will begin their onboarding process in early August 2022. Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 449 hours of training. Some of the subjects include: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.
