Fire Department Weekly Report - week of August 7 – 13, 2022

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of August 7 – 13, 2022. The following is a breakdown of incident types recorded for this time period:

Sunday, August 7 At 10:32 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a traffic accident in the 400 block of West Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a single vehicle traffic accident with one patient. Fire personnel evaluated a 33-year-old male patient who suffered a syncopal episode after the car accident. The patient received advanced life support including 12-lead cardiac monitoring and intravenous access with blood glucose testing. The patient was transported to Huntington Trauma Center for further evaluation and treatment. Monday, August 8 At 12:42 p.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 106 were dispatched to a reported traffic collision at the intersection of Orange Grove Avenue and Rodeo Road. Fire crews arrived to find a two-vehicle traffic collision with extensive passenger space intrusion. One 55-year-old female patient complaining of chest pain caused by the accident was treated with advanced life support and transported to Huntington Health (formerly Huntington Memorial Hospital).

Tuesday, August 9 At 12:33 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to the 800 block of Coronado Drive for a reported person with an altered level of consciousness. Fire crews arrived to find an 18-year-old male patient that was disoriented. Paramedics initiated advanced life support measures including 12-lead electrocardiogram, blood glucose testing, and oxygen saturation level testing. The patient was transported to USC Arcadia Hospital for further treatment. Wednesday, August 10 At 5:50 p.m., Engine 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, and Battalion 105 responded to a police standby with an officer down in the 2500 block of Greenfield Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel set up the Incident Command System and prepared to treat patients. With assistance from San Marino, Monrovia, and Pasadena Fire Departments, fire personnel treated a total of five patients with various injuries including gunshot wounds and facial and leg trauma. The patients received advanced life support en route to the hospital, including bandaging, cardiac monitoring, blood glucose check, and intravenous access with fluids. Four patients were transported to Huntington Trauma Center and one patient to County USC Trauma Center for further evaluation and treatment. Thursday, August 11 At 6:03 p.m., Engine 106 with Sierra Madre Rescue Ambulance 41 responded to a traffic accident at the intersection of Baldwin Avenue and Colorado Boulevard. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a 70-year-old male patient who was suffering from facial trauma and chest pain. The patient received advanced life support including cardiac monitoring, glucose check, and intravenous access. The patient was transported to Huntington Trauma Center for further evaluation and treatment.

Friday, August 12 At 4:09 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to an auto versus bicycle accident at the intersection of Huntington Drive and Santa Clara Street. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a 38-year-old male patient who was suffering from leg pain after the accident. The patient received advanced life support including 12-lead cardiac monitoring, blood glucose check, and intravenous access. The patient was transported to USC Arcadia Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Saturday, August 13 At 1:40 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 were dispatched to a medical incident in the 100 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire crews found a 28- year-old male patient that was assaulted by another individual. The patient received a full medical evaluation which included 12-lead electrocardiogram, intravenous therapy, and wound care. The patient was transported to USC Arcadia Hospital for further evaluation. Strike Team Deployment Our four members serving on a Type VI fire engine and as the strike team leader trainee returned home on Saturday, August 13, after a 20-day deployment. They completed their final assignments at the McKinney Fire near Yreka including mop up and bolstering containment lines. Fire crews from West Covina, Long Beach, Pasadena, Compton, and Torrance also returned to their home agency. Our members returned without injury.

Personnel Update Three new faces started with the Fire Department on Monday, August 8. Probationary Firefighters Adrian Lopez, Nick Stratton, and Alex Tayco began their three-week on- boarding process. Upon completion of the three-week training, they will continue on to their on-the-job training which will consist of ten 24-hour shift shadowing a firefighter with more experience. With this addition, the Fire Department will currently have one remaining vacancy with nine probationary firefighters and two probationary engineers.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 540 hours of training. Some of the subjects include: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.
