Fire Department Weekly Report -week of August 14 – 20, 2022

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of August 14 – 20, 2022. The following is a breakdown of incident types recorded for this time period:

Sunday, August 14 At 12:26 p.m., USAR 106, Engine 107, Rescue Ambulance 106, and Battalion 105 responded with Sierra Madre units to assist with locating and extricating two stranded hikers suffering from heat exhaustion and dehydration off of Mount Wilson Hiking Trail. Sierra Madre crews were assigned as a reconnaissance team to locate and evaluate the situation and medical needs. The stranded hikers were found, and advanced life support was initiated including administration of intravenous fluids caused by the extreme heat and signs of obvious dehydration. With the severity of heat exposure, Los Angeles County Sheriffs Air Five helicopter was requested for a hoist-style rescue. Arcadia units created a landing zone receiving the patient and transporting her via ground ambulance to USC Arcadia Hospital for further care and treatment.
Monday, August 15 At 11:37 p.m., Engine 107 responded to a carbon monoxide alarm incident in the 1000 block of Don Robles Drive. Fire crews arrived to find a carbon monoxide alarm ringing. Fire crews monitored the atmosphere and confirmed high levels of carbon monoxide. Truck 105 was requested to perform positive pressure ventilation to ensure that the interior atmosphere was cleared of carbon monoxide to a safe level. The cause was found to be a faulty appliance and that appliance was isolated and shut down. After ventilating the home the atmosphere was again monitored and found to be within a normal and safe range for the residents to reoccupy. Tuesday, August 16 At 3:47 p.m., Engine 106 with San Marino Rescue Ambulance 91 responded to a medical assist in the 1600 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a 68-year-old male patient who was suffering from general weakness after surgery. The patient received advanced life support including 12-lead cardiac monitoring, intravenous access, and blood glucose monitoring. The patient was transported to USC Arcadia Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Wednesday, August 17 At 11:13 a.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 600 block of West Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a 72-year-old male patient who was suffering from low oxygen saturation. The patient received advanced life support including oxygen administration, 12-lead cardiac monitoring, intravenous access, and blood glucose monitoring. The patient was transported to San Gabriel Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment.

Thursday, August 18 At 11:55 p.m., Engine 106, Rescue Ambulance 106, Truck 105, and Battalion 105 were dispatched to a report of a person trapped in a vehicle in the 400 block of Fairview Avenue. Upon arrival, there was one vehicle that was found upside down after being involved in a traffic collision. The patient was a 25-year- old male that was able to self-extricate from his vehicle. The patient received a full medical evaluation which included a 12- lead electrocardiogram, full set of vital signs, and wound care. The patient declined transport to the hospital and remained on scene with Arcadia Police Department.
Friday, August 19 At 11:20 p.m., Engine 41, Rescue Ambulance 106, Rescue Ambulance 105, Rescue Ambulance 41, Engine 37, and Battalion 105 were dispatched to a report of a multiple- victim medical incident in the 500 block of North Michillinda Way. Upon arrival, there were three male patients that were combative and overdosed on a substance. All of the patients received full medical evaluations which included a 12-lead electrocardiogram, full set of vital signs, and intravenous therapy. Two of the patients were transported to USC Arcadia Hospital and one was transported to Huntington Health for further evaluation. Saturday, August 20 At 5:08 p.m., Engine 106, Engine 102, and Monrovia Squad 102 responded to a traffic collision reported on the east bound 210 Freeway east of Santa Anita Avenue. Fire crews arrived to find a two-vehicle traffic collision with one person that was injured. Monrovia Paramedics under our automatic aid agreement arrived on scene to assess, treat, and transport the patient to USC Arcadia Hospital. Personnel Update Our three newest probationary firefighters began the second week of their three-week onboarding training. This week’s focus was on fire engine operations including the deployment of engine ladders, extending different variations of hoselays, wildland firefighting operations, hydrant connections, and the introduction of engine equipment carried and utilized by the Fire Department. Upon completion of their onboarding and one- month on-the-job training, they will fill three of the four remaining vacancies and provide much needed relief to Department members who have put in many hours to ensure that the City is fully and adequately staffed with firefighters.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 367 hours of training. Some of the subjects include: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.
