Fire Department Weekly Report - October 3 – 9, 2021

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of October 3 – 9, 2021. The following is a breakdown of incident types recorded for this time period:

Sunday, October 3 At 8:39 p.m., Truck 105, Engine 107, and Battalion 105 assisted units from Monrovia Fire Department to a structure fire in the 500 block of Fano Street, Monrovia. Upon arrival, fire units found smoke and fire coming from a detached garage. Fire personnel aggressively extinguished the fire and contained the fire to the building of origin. In addition, fire crews searched for any victims and provided for firefighter safety. The incident was released to Monrovia Fire Department.

Monday, October 4 At 9:13 p.m., Engine 105 responded to a report of downed power lines in the 800 block of West Norman Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered multiple downed power lines due to high wind activity in the area. The residence had lost power and there was a live wire on the ground. The power lines that were down spanned three pole lengths. Fire personnel established a safe area with the assistance of Arcadia Police Department. Southern California Edison was notified and arrived on scene to mitigate the problem. Tuesday, October 5 At 10:47 p.m., Engine 105 responded to the westbound 210 Freeway to a report of a vehicle fire. Fire crews arrived to find a semi-truck on the shoulder of the freeway. The brakes of the vehicle were smoking, and fire crews utilized a thermal imaging camera to detect a temperature of over 400 degrees Fahrenheit. A dry chemical extinguisher and a water can were used to cool the affected area. After the problem was mitigated, California Highway Patrol arrived and remained with the driver of the vehicle. Wednesday, October 6 At 10:22 a.m., Engine 107 responded to the 1100 block of El Caballo Drive for a child locked inside a vehicle. Firefighters found a child playing with car keys that had inadvertently locked the car. Fire crew members made access into the vehicle with no damage in less than 90 seconds. The child was not in distress and was safely returned to the guardian. Thursday, October 7 At 1:47 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to the 300 block of Santa Cruz Road for a reported drowning victim. Firefighters arrived to find that family members had rescued an elderly male from the pool. Paramedics immediately assessed the patient however ultimately had to pronounce the patient as deceased on scene.

Friday, October 8 At 3:32 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the first block of Winnie Way. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a 54-year-old male patient lying down and experiencing an altered level of consciousness. The patient received advanced life support including 12-lead cardiac monitoring, intervenes access, and glucose check. The patient was found to be hypoglycemic after a glucose test reading. The patient received medication, became more alert, and was found with no signs of trauma. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Saturday, October 9 At 2:55 p.m., Engine 107 and Engine 106 responded to a report of a vehicle fire on the westbound 210 Freeway at the Baldwin Avenue off ramp. Upon arrival, fire crews found a vehicle with a well-developed engine compartment fire that extended into the passenger space. Fire crews utilized a 1.5-inch hose line and Class A foam to extinguish the vehicle fire. There were no injuries during this incident and California Highway Patrol remained on scene with the driver.

Strike Team Activity Our last remaining member out on deployment to the Windy Fire returned home after a 16-day assignment. He served as a Fireline EMT, providing medical support to fire personnel on various divisions of the fire. The fire season for 2021 has been busy with multiple deployments of single resource personnel such as Fireline EMTs and fire engines as part of different strike teams. Training During the reporting period, Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 343 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre- Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.
