The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of May 8 – 14, 2022. The following is a breakdown of incident types recorded for this time period:
Sunday, May 8 At 9:38 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a report of a medical incident in the 400 block of West Le Roy Avenue. Upon arrival, there was one patient with a complaint of low blood sugar and blurred vision. Fire personnel performed a full medical evaluation which included intravenous access, blood pressure check, and a cardiac electrocardiogram. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further treatment. Monday, May 9 At 12:48 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a report of a two- vehicle traffic collision at the intersection of Second Avenue and Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, there was one injured patient. The 36-year-old female patient had a chief complaint of back pain. Fire personnel performed a full medical evaluation which included intravenous access, blood pressure check, and a cardiac electrocardiogram. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further treatment. Tuesday, May 10 At 5:20 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 107, and Monrovia Engine 102 responded to the 5400 block of Peck Road for a reported vegetation fire. Fire crews arrived to find a large column of white smoke that was caused from the burning vegetation. Fire crews quickly suppressed the fire and worked on scene to mop up the area due to a high potential for a rekindle. The fire is under investigation and human activity is suspected as the cause. Wednesday, May 11 At 10:14 p.m., Truck 105 responded to a reported animal rescue. Firefighters arrived to find a resident stating that a cat was under the hood of his car. Firefighters found a small kitten behind the engine and carefully removed it. A local family offered to take care of the kitten and follow up with neighbors and Animal Control. Firefighters cleared the scene with an uninjured kitten and no damage to the vehicle. Thursday, May 12 At 4:31 p.m., Rescue Ambulance 105 and Truck 105 responded to a medical assist in the 100 block of North First Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a 19-year-old male patient who was suffering from leg pain after a fall. The patient received advanced life support including 12-lead cardiac monitoring and glucose test. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Friday, May 13 At 10:56 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a report of an automobile versus pedestrian incident at the intersection of Second Avenue and Genoa Street. Upon arrival, there was one injured patient that was struck by a car that was reportedly traveling approximately 30 miles per hour. Fire personnel performed a full medical evaluation which included intravenous access, blood pressure check, and a cardiac electrocardiogram. The 18-year-old male patient was transported to Huntington Trauma Center for further treatment. Saturday, May 14 At 7:16 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a report of a medical incident in the 200 block of West Laurel Avenue. Upon arrival, there was one patient with complaints of weakness, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. Fire personnel performed a full medical evaluation which included intravenous access, blood pressure check, and a cardiac electrocardiogram. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further treatment.
Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 409 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre- Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.
Personnel Update Our newest probationary firefighter Derek Rinella successfully completed his three-week orientation and one-month onboarding training. On May 12, in front of his family and colleagues, his fiancée pinned onto Firefighter Rinella his official probationary firefighter badge. As part of the process, he confirmed his commitment to City of Arcadia by taking the oath of affirmation. Three additional probationary firefighters will begin their orientation and onboarding process at the end of this month.
