Fire Department Weekly Report - May 29 to June 4, 2022

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of May 29 – June 4, 2022. The following is a breakdown of incident types recorded for this time period:

Sunday, May 29 At 3:23 a.m., Truck 105, Engine 106, Engine 107, Rescue Ambulance 106, and Battalion 105 responded to the eastbound 210 Freeway at Santa Anita Avenue for a vehicle that overturned. Crews investigated the scene and found four patients that needed medical attention and one needing extrication. Engine 107 was assigned Medical Group Leader and Truck 105 was assigned Extrication Group. Paramedics performed a full medical evaluation of the four patients. California Highway Patrol closed the freeway for an investigation.

Monday, May 30 At 1:10 p.m., Engine 107 was dispatched to a vehicle fire on Santa Anita Avenue, south of the 210 Freeway. Upon arrival, fire crew found a fully involved vehicle located in front of the United States Forest Service Headquarters entrance. The fire crew began fire attack operations with a 1.5" hose line. The fire was contained to the vehicle’s area of origin. Arcadia Police Department was on scene to assist with traffic control. There were no injuries to report on this incident.

Tuesday, May 31 At 8:40 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the first block of Lucille Street. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated an 85-year-old female patient who was suffering from feeling weak and dizzy. The patient received advanced life support including 12-lead cardiac monitoring and intravenous access with glucose testing. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Wednesday, June 1 At 5:32 p.m., Engine 106 was dispatched to a vehicle fire at the intersection of Fairview Avenue and Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, the fire crew found one vehicle with an active engine compartment fire and began fire extinguishment with a 1.5" front bumper hose line. The fire was contained to the area of origin. Arcadia Police Department was on scene to assist with traffic control. There were no injuries to report on this incident.

Thursday, June 2 At 10:51 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 were dispatched to a medical incident in the 900 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire crews found one female patient with a complaint of agitated delirium. Fire crews performed a full medical evaluation which included a 12-lead electrocardiogram and intravenous therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for an evaluation. Friday, June 3 At 11:43 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to the 100 block of Huntington Drive for a reported person down. Fire crews arrived to find a 50-year-old male patient suffering from a head injury after a fall. Paramedics initiated advanced life support measures including a 12-lead electrocardiogram, blood glucose testing, and intravenous access for medications. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further care and evaluation. Saturday, June 4 At 10:22 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to the 800 block of West Huntington Drive for a reported two-vehicle traffic collision. Firefighters arrived to find a solo vehicle with multiple passengers in it that had hit a parked vehicle. Two patients were evaluated and treated for contusions and abrasions. Both patients were transported to San Gabriel Medical Clinic for further care and evaluation

Personnel Update During the reporting period, three new probationary

firefighters started their careers with the Arcadia Fire Department. Their names are Robert Clark IV (Cal Fire), Nathanial Correa (Cal Fire), and Ryan Granberg (Kern Co. Fire). The first week of their orientation consists of various training topics including self- contained breathing apparatus, radio communications, rapid intervention, and various administrative topics. Five candidates successfully passed the application screening process for the Fire Engineer promotional examination. The written examination was held on Wednesday and all five candidates also successfully passed this process. The practical assessment, which evaluates a candidate’s knowledge of emergency vehicle operations, knowledge and use of equipment and apparatus, and practical application of knowledge to the job, will be held on June 14.

Strike Team Deployment Strike Team 1860F continued to work various assignments in support of fire operations at the New Mexico wildfires. This week began the second week of their two-week deployment. Some examples included mopping up hot spots, supporting water supply operations, and structure defense. The entire strike team was demobilized, and crews returned to their home agencies in California on Friday, June 3.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 454 hours of training. Some of the subjects include: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.
