Fire Department Weekly Report-July 11 - 17, 2021

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of July 11 – 17, 2021. The following is a breakdown of incident types recorded for this time period:
Sunday, July 11 At 1:48 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 700 block of West Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a 64-year-old male patient who was experiencing an altered level of consciousness. The patient received advanced life support including 12-lead cardiac monitoring, intravenous access, and glucose check. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Monday, July 12 At 10:38 a.m., Engine 107 and Truck 105 responded to a reported miscellaneous outside fire in the 400 block of East Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found smoke and fire from an outside trash area in the rear of the structure, as well as a leak from a compressed gas cylinder. Fire personnel extinguished the fire quickly with no major damage to the structure. The origin of the fire was suspicious in nature, so Investigator 107 was assigned to the incident. The area of the fire was overhauled, and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Tuesday, July 13 At 12:50 p.m., Engine 106 responded to a report of a dumpster fire in the 1200 block of Golden West Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found one roll-off dumpster with trash burning inside. Fire personnel extinguished the fire quickly and confined the fire to the dumpster area. The contents of the fire were overhauled, and Investigator 105 determined that the fire was not suspicious in nature. Wednesday, July 14 At 2:17 p.m., Engine 106 responded to the 800 block of Fairview Avenue to a reported vehicle fire. Fire crew arrived to find a vehicle with its engine compartment smoldering and smoking. The hood of the vehicle was forced open with hand tools and the fire was extinguished with a 1 3⁄4” handline. There was no damage to the passenger space and the owner denied any mechanical failure.

Thursday, July 15 At 6:34 p.m., Engine 106, Truck 105, Engine 105, and Battalion 105 responded to a report of smoke inside of a structure in the 600 block of West Woodruff Avenue. Fire crews arrived and found smoke and fire in the kitchen and the attic of the structure. Battalion 105 upgraded the incident to a full-structure fire response. Fire crews performed fire attack operations, ventilation, salvage, and overhaul operations. The fire was determined to be a kitchen fire that spread to the attic. No injuries were reported.
Friday, July 16 At 9:48 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 00 block of Camino Real Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a 90-year- old female patient who was experiencing chest pain. The patient received advanced life support including 12-lead cardiac monitoring, intravenous access, medications, and glucose check. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Saturday, July 17 At 8:13 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 5000 block of Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a 69-year-old male patient who was experiencing an altered level of consciousness. The patient received advanced life support including 12-lead cardiac monitoring, intravenous access, and glucose check. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Strike Team Activity During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department deployed one fire engine and a battalion chief to various large wildfires across the western region of the United States. These requests are part of the large Cal OES master mutual aid system providing assistance across the state of California and beyond. The Arcadia Fire Department remains fully staffed. OES Engine 343 and an Arcadia Fire battalion chief, functioning as a strike team leader, and four other Cal OES-owned fire engines from the local area were initially deployed to the state of Oregon as part of Strike Team 1840A on July 15 at 6:10 a.m. While on assignment in Oregon, the strike team engaged in various tasks including initial attack on an 8-acre grass fire and a recreational vehicle that caught fire. Strike Team 1840A remained assigned to the state of Oregon.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 317 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre- Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review. Community Outreach During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department partnered with Arcadia Recreation and Community Services Department on presentations during the City’s Day Camp Program. Students were taught basic fire safety tips including “stop, drop, and roll” and when to call 9-1-1. Additionally, students were shown the fire engine and its equipment, and firefighter personal protective gear.
