Fire Department Weekly Report July 18- 24, 2021

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of July 18 – 24, 2021. The following is a breakdown of incident types recorded for this time period:


Sunday, July 18 At 6:20 p.m., OES Engine 343, Strike Team Leader Battalion Chief 105, and units assigned to the 1840A Strike Team responded to a vehicle fire with brush involved. The incident was on West Valley View Road in Talent, Oregon, and was not part of the Bootleg Fire. Fire crews extinguished the car fire and contained the fire that was burning in the surrounding brush.



Monday, July 19 At 6:29 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a report of a person experiencing weakness in the 900 block of Hugo Reid Drive. The patient received advanced life support including an electrocardiogram and intravenous therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for evaluation.


Tuesday, July 20 At 2:06 p.m., Truck 105 responded to a report of an animal rescue in a parking lot near the 400 block of North Santa Anita Avenue. Upon arrival, fire crew found a kitten stuck in the engine compartment of a vehicle. Fire crew utilized a lockout tool to extricate the kitten and moved it to safety. There was no damage to the vehicle and the kitten did not sustain any injuries.


Wednesday, July 21 At 6:02 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical incident in the 600 block of West Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a 65-year-old female patient experiencing weakness. The patient received advanced life support including oxygen therapy, 12-lead cardiac monitoring, intravenous access, and medication therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.


Thursday, July 22 At 6:02 p.m., Truck 105 came across a still alarm of a 3-vehicle traffic collision at the intersection of Santa Anita Avenue and Foothill Boulevard. Additional units were called to assist. Arcadia Police Department also responded to shut down the intersection and provided safety for the crews. All persons involved denied transport to the hospital after being evaluated by fire personnel.


Friday, July 23 At 8:25 p.m., Engine 705 responded to a fire alarm activation in the 100 block of North Second Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found the third floor filled with smoke and one of the rooms had burnt food that caused the initial alarm. Truck 105 was called to assist and utilized positive pressure ventilation to remove the smoke and the alarm system was reset. Saturday, July 24 At 4:37 p.m., Truck 105 responded to a report of a water leak in the 1100 block of South Fifth Avenue. Fire crew found a leaking fire hydrant that was causing water to flood the street. Fire crew utilized a fire hydrant key to shut down the main water valve that was supplying the fire hydrant. Caution tape was placed around the area of the fire hydrant and proper notifications were made to mitigate the problem. Strike Team Activity During the reporting period, Arcadia Fire Department deployed one additional fire engine to assist in the fight of several large wildfires across the western region of the United States.

OES Engine 343 and an Arcadia Fire battalion chief, functioning as a strike team leader, and four other Cal OES-owned fire engines from the local area were reassigned to Dixie Fire in the Butte County area as part of Strike Team 1840A. While on assignment, the strike team engaged in various tasks including mop up, protecting and defending structures, and supporting backfiring operations. Strike Team 1840A remained assigned to Dixie Fire.

Engine 105 along with four other local municipal fire engines were dispatched as part of Strike Team 1205A to Dixie Fire in the Butte County area on July 20 at 4:33 a.m. While on assignment, the strike team engaged in similar tasks as OES Engine 343 including mop up, protecting, and defending structures. Strike Team 1205A remained assigned to Dixie Fire.


Training During the reporting period, Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 269 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre- Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.
