Drowning, brush fires

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Aug. 22-28, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, August 22 At 3:41 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical aid in the 200 block of Alice Street. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a male patient who had a seizure prior to fire department arrival. Fire personnel provided advanced life support measures and transported the patient to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Monday, August 23 At 12:34 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Engine 107, Rescue Ambulance 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, and Battalion 105 responded to a reported brush fire in the 1200 block of Canyon Boulevard in the city of Monrovia. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a brush fire burning in heavy vegetation in extremely steep terrain. Fire personnel were assigned to fire attack and established a medical group to treat injured firefighters, established a resource staging area, and performed structure protection. Three injuries were reported and Arcadia Paramedics transported two patients with heat related injuries to an area emergency room.

Tuesday, August 24 * At 1:53 p.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a report of a person with difficulty breathing in the 200 block of Renoak.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found a minor female in what appeared to be anaphylactic shock. Fire personnel provided advanced life support measures and transported the patient to a pediatric medical center for further evaluation and treatment. * At 5:18 p.m., Arcadia Fire Department personnel staffed California Emergency Management Agency (CALEMA) Engine 343, with additional CALEMA Engines from Monrovia, Sierra Madre, Montebello, and La Habra Heights to form Strike Team 1800A, with Battalion Chief 105 serving as Strike Team Leader. Region I requested the Strike Team for Mutual Aid on a large brush fire in the region of Lebec, in Kern County, California.  The Strike Team was assigned to structure protection and supported firing-out operations. Engine 343 returned to the City at 12:34 p.m. on August 26, 2010.

Wednesday, August 25 At 3:19 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a reported traffic collision in the 300 block of East Live Oak Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a single vehicle that had struck a tree. Fire personnel assessed and treated the female driver, who stated she fell asleep while driving. The patient was transported to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries.

Thursday, August 26 At 10:55 a.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, Battalion 105, Monrovia Truck 101 and Los Angeles County Engine 5 responded to smoke inside of a structure at 400 South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel were informed that there was smoke in the rear corridors of the facility. Fire personnel determined the cause of the smoke was due to a malfunctioning exhaust fan in the cooking area. Saturday, August 28 At 4:02 p.m., Truck 105 and a Monrovia Fire Department Paramedic unit responded to a reported drowning in the 1100 block of LaRosa Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a teenaged male who had been pulled from the bottom of a pool by bystanders. The bystanders had initiated CPR. Fire personnel assessed, treated and transported this patient to an area trauma center for further evaluation and treatment. Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 385 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 6 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the department with administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
