Car hits 12-year-old on scooter

The Arcadia Police Department had officers respond to the intersection of Second Avenue and El Dorado Street at approximately 6:01 p.m. on Wednesday, January 29, 2014. They were investigating the report of a traffic collision, involving a juvenile riding a push scooter. The automobile was traveling southbound on Second Avenue. The driver is a 65-year-old female resident of El Monte. The 12 year-old male juvenile was riding his push scooter northbound on Second Avenue in the southbound bicycle lane. The juvenile veered into the southbound lane of traffic and was struck by the vehicle near the intersection of El Dorado Street, launching through the air and to the ground.

Arcadia Fire Department Paramedics treated the juvenile at the scene and transported him to LA County USC Medical Center. The 12 year-old male resident of Arcadia suffered a major head injury, but is expected to survive.The driver of the vehicle was not injured. An investigation revealed the driver was not under the influence. The case was referred to the Department of Child and Family Services due to the parents allowing the boy to ride his scooter without a helmet.
