The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Sept. 5-11, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, September 5 At 4:35 p.m., Engine 106 responded to a power line down in the 400 block of Los Altos Avenue.  Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered an energized electrical service line running from the utility pole to the weather head on the occupancy down in the backyard.  Fire personnel isolated the area around the downed power line and released the scene to Southern California Edison’s upon their arrival.

Monday, September 6 At 7:48 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to an emergency medical assist in the 00 block of California Street. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a confused and altered elderly female sitting in a chair. The patient’s husband stated she had not been acting normal for the last 30 minutes. Fire personnel, assessed the patient’s blood sugar level, which was extremely low and administered intravenous dextrose to the patient and she immediately became alert and answered questions appropriately. The patient was transported to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Tuesday, September 07 At 2:32 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 200 block of North Santa Anita Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel treated a female patient complaining of extremity pain from a fall from exercise equipment. Additional units were requested due to the size of the patient, to assist with lifting. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Wednesday, September 8 At 12:14 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a reported traffic collision in the 100 block of Campus Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a two-vehicle traffic collision with three patients. Fire personnel assessed and treated all three patients for assorted musculoskeletal injuries and transported two of the patients to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Friday, September 10, 2010 At 6:27 p.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the intersection of Hampton Road and Singingwood Drive. Fire personnel treated a male patient suffering from blunt head trauma and facial lacerations as a result of a vehicle versus bicycle. The patient was treated on scene and placed in full cervical spine immobilization. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Saturday, September 11 At 6:23 p.m., Engine 107, Engine 105, Engine 106, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, Battalion 105, with Monrovia and Los Angeles County Fire Department units, responded to a reported structure fire in the 1100 block of West Colorado Blvd. Upon arrival, fire crews found customers evacuating from a single story restaurant with light smoke coming from the front door. After further investigation, fire personnel identified a malfunctioning air conditioning unit on the roof. Firefighters disconnected the power to the air conditioner, used smoke removal fans to evacuate residual smoke from the structure, and evaluated two patients experiencing difficulty breathing. The scene was released to management.

Patriot’s Day Ceremony, September 11 September 11th is Patriot’s Day, a national day of commemoration for the lives lost in the terrorist attack on the United States of America in 2001.  Members of the Arcadia Fire Department participated in a ceremony that began at 6:45 a.m., which included a moment of silence, following by the reading of the names of all 343 firefighters who lost their lives in service on that fateful day.  The ceremony concluded with the traditional 5-5-5 last bells call and the solemn strains of a lone bagpipe, played by Arcadia Fire Captain David Hutcheson.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 439 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 6 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the department with administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
