99 Fire Dept calls 9/26-10/2

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Sept. 26 – Oct. 2, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, September 26 At 12:35 p.m., Engine 107, Engine 106, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, Battalion 105 with units from the Pasadena and Monrovia Fire Departments responded to a reported structure fire in the 300 block of Hacienda Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found light smoke coming from the rear of a large residential structure. After further investigation, fire personnel found the smoke was due to a malfunctioning dryer. Firefighters disconnected the power from the dryer and released the scene to the occupants.

Monday, September 27 At 3:30 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a fall victim in the 1300 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an elderly female who had fallen inside the facility. Paramedics performed an assessment on the patient, who refused treatment and did not want to go to the hospital. The patient was advised to follow up with her private physician.

Tuesday, September 28 At 8:33 a.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 1400 block of Rancho Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel treated a male patient who was complaining leg pain from a mechanical fall. The patient experienced a significant fracture to the lower leg. The leg was stabilized with air splints on scene and the patient received narcotics for pain management and was placed in full cervical spine immobilization. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Wednesday, September 29 At 10:33 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a fall victim in the 800 block of Hugo Reid Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an elderly male lying face down in the front yard. The patient had sustained cuts and bruises and had an altered level of consciousness. The patient was treated at the scene by paramedics and transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Thursday, September 30 At 2:19 p.m., Engine 106, Engine 105, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, Air Light Unit 106, Battalion 105, with units from the Monrovia and Los Angeles County Fire Departments, responded to a reported structure fire in the 400 block of West Lemon Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found fire inside an exterior wall and attic at the front of the structure. Fire crews on scene provided fire extinguishment, ventilation, overhaul, and cause and origin investigation. The fire was contained to the room of origin and was considered accidental in nature.

Friday, October 1 At 11:10 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to an emergency medical assist in the 100 block of Campus Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an on-site construction worker who received an electrical shock while working. Fire personnel provided advanced life support to the patient including a 12-lead electrocardiogram, and the transported this patient to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Saturday, October 2 At 9:20 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to an emergency medical assist in the 600 block of South Sunset Boulevard. Upon arrival, fire personnel were met by Arcadia Police Officers stating there was a verbally abusive and combative elderly male refusing to take his prescription medications. Fire personnel were able to gain the patients trust and confidence and convince him to go to a local emergency room for further observation and possible treatment, and transported the patient, without incident, to a local emergency room.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 512.75 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 8 hours of volunteer activities. Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week and assisted the department with processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports and performing administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau. It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
