MONROVIA, CA – AUGUST 29, 2016 – On, Saturday, September 17, 2016 from 8:00am – 3:00pm, SET for LIFE Families will host its 12th Annual Healthy FAMILIES for LIFE fair. Over 350 families are are expected to attend access fun and informative workshops, health screenings, games, prizes, food, music and much more The event is organized to inspire families young and old to make healthier lifestyles choices everyday, reduce the preventative chronic diseases and decrease the increasingly mortality rates; especially among ethnic minorities.
For most cancers, African-American have the highest death rate and shortest survival of any racial/ethnic group in the United States. Over 68,000 black men and women are expected to die from cancer in 2016. In 2015, it was estimate there would be 13,000 (22%) new cases of Prostate Cancer among Latino men and 19,800 (29%) new case of breast cancer for Latino women. Among Asians, cancer is the leading cause of death, accounting for 27% of all deaths. “Educating and training families has been our primary goal for more than 12 years.” said Patricia Duff Tucker, Co-President of SET for LIFE/FAMILIES.
New this year are special activities, workshops for youth and teens from 10:00am – 1:00pm to help reduce the risk of certain chronic diseases. “Unfortunately, many ethnic minorities grew up on certain types of cultural foods, lifestyles and inhibitions about getting our bodies checked out. Unfortunately, it is killing us and we are passing it onto our children and grandchildren.” James Baldwin once said, “Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them.”
There are several workshops presented by industry professionals and celebrities. Including; Life Reimagined, presented by AARP , the infamous Mother Love’s Healthy Dish Diabetes Awareness, Lung Cancer Prevention and screening by leading specialist JonJon Macalintal from City of Hope. In honor of National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, a special “men only” workshop will be presented. Some other workshops are; Preventing One Million Heart Attacks and Eat this and not that nutrition.
Over a dozen health screenings will be offered, including; Pulmonary Function Test, Diabetes, Blood Pressure, Health and Weight, Body Mass Index, Cholesterol and more. Attendees can also find out more information about enrolling for Covered California Health Insurance. Open enrollment begins is October 15 – December 7. Workshops, screenings and vendors are being updated daily, so visit the site often to see what’s new!
Through a partnership with Inner Images, low income women 40+ will receive a free mammogram through the Every Woman Counts Program. Women are not low income and who still need a mammogram pay only $100.There are only 40 spaces available for mammograms and women must pre-register at www.setforlifenews.org.
SET for LIFE/FAMILIES works closely with such sponsors and partners as; City of Hope, American Cancer Society, Patron Saints Foundation, California American Water, AARP, Wells Fargo, Second Baptist Church Monrovia School District and City of Monrovia, along local federally supported health facilities and community based nonprofit organizations.
The event will also feature free food, games and activities, prizes, a photo booth, music and lots of fun activities for the whole family.
