William Millard’s Personal Anecdotes of Baldwin

William Millard, a resident of Arcadia, regularly purchased hay from Mr. Baldwin. On one business visit with him, Baldwin invited him up to his adobe house. When they were seated, he said, “Excuse me a minute. I haven’t fed my kitties.” Baldwin excused himself to “get food to feed his “kitties.” He went into the kitchen and got a loaf of bread, returned and called his “kitties.” He pinched pieces of bread and threw them out to the “kitties. “ To Millard’s surprise, the “kitties” were skunks, and of all sizes. Strangely, not one hint of odor was evident with that many skunks eating the bits of bread from Baldwin’s hand. The skunks lived beneath Baldwin’s home and under the veranda.

Millard said Baldwin loved all animals and never mistreated any. He couldn’t even bring himself to butcher his farm animals for food for his help. He purchased butchered meat from the “City.”
