William H. Millard

William Millard was a racehorse man, and was racing his horses at Los Angeles (Ascot Race-Track) at the time it closed. When Baldwin built his racetrack in Arcadia, Millard brought his stable of six horses to race at this new Santa Anita Park. Millard decided to buy a ranch in Arcadia since he had won a great deal of money on a bet and could afford it. He purchased ten acres that stretched from Sixth to Fourth Avenues on the south side of Camino Real. It was here he build his home, raised his family, worked with horses and cattle, and entered into the political arena of Arcadia. He was elected to Arcadia City Council in 1916 and served as Mayor from 1919 to 1920. Mr. Millard was a 56 year resident of Arcadia.
